Purpose

Oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of grounds and landscape equipment. Perform diagnostic work, repairs, and preventative maintenance on outdoor power equipment. Operate a wide range of landscape equipment and heavy machinery to support unit operations and ensure efficient ground maintenance.

Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy grounds and landscape equipment—including backhoes, forklifts, skid steers, tractors with implements, street sweepers, and dump trucks—to support efficient grounds operations.
  • Perform repairs and routine maintenance on outdoor power equipment—including trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, edgers, golfcarts, mowers, tractors, and other small-engine tools—to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation.
  • Maintain facilities, work areas, storage yards, landscape materials, and other departmental spaces to ensure a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
  • Complete required administrative tasks, including time cards, work orders, and related documentation for training and labor reporting.
  • Perform other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED. Five years of experience operating heavy equipment. One year of experience in small-engine repair. One year of experience operating outdoor power equipment. Basic computer knowledge and familiarity with standard workplace software. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two-year college degree or vocational/technical certification in light mechanics, heavy equipment operation, or small-engine repair.
  • Knowledge of basic welding techniques.
  • Certifications or licenses for equipment operation (such as backhoe, skid steer, or forklift).
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • OSHA safety certifications.
  • Experience working on a university institutional campus.
Driving Required

This job requires a class “C” operator's driver's license. Applicants must provide a current three-year driving record from the state of residence. If not a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing.

Salary Range

$45,760 + depending on qualifications
