Position Information

The TxDOT Support Service Division is seeking a dependable and experienced professional to join our team as a HVAC Air Conditioning and Heating Mechanic. This role involves performing highly skilled work in the installation, maintenance, servicing, and repair of HVAC systems as well as general building maintenance tasks. While most tasks are completed independently, support is available for unusual or complex issues.

Minimum Salary: $60,000.00

Maximum Salary: $80,000.00

Day job – Monday‑Friday, 6:30 am‑3:30 pm or 7:00 am‑4:00 pm

Responsibilities
  • Perform highly skilled work in installation, maintenance, servicing and repair of HVAC systems; may involve general maintenance repair work.
  • Serve as lead worker for a group of building trades employees; independently perform assignments, refer unusual issues to supervisor.
  • Enter work order information and track projects in the automated software system and order materials and equipment.
  • Inspect completed jobs for quality control.
  • Perform periodic preventive maintenance on heating, ventilating, air conditioning, electrical and/or plumbing systems.
  • Train other mechanics in building trades.
  • Serve as lead worker providing resource for complex questions, workflow updates, team career input, approve leave requests to ensure operations coverage.
  • Repair or replace defective HVAC chiller equipment (up to 499 tons).
    Repair or replace defective boilers up to 1,749,000 BTU/hour‑output.
  • Maintain, repair and service air‑conditioning/heating units and ventilation systems.
  • Perform general building maintenance and repairs.
  • Perform weekly walk‑through of buildings to inspect operation of utility systems and related equipment.
  • Plan and coordinate to determine best methods and materials for fabrication, maintenance, repair and finishing projects, including services provided by outside vendors.
  • Provide estimates of time and materials needed for each assignment.
  • Repair HVAC electrical control systems.
  • Discuss heating or cooling system malfunctions with users to isolate problems or verify repairs.
  • Adjust system controls to manufacturer recommended settings.
  • Recommend, develop or perform preventive or general maintenance procedures, such as cleaning, power‑washing, vacuuming equipment, oiling parts, changing filters.
  • Assemble, position and mount heating or cooling equipment following blueprints or manufacturer specifications.
  • Observe and test system operation, using gauges and instruments.
  • Schedule work with customers and initiate work orders, house requisitions, orders from stock.
  • Estimate, order, pick up, deliver and install materials and supplies.
  • Read blueprints to determine location, size, capacity and type of components needed for refrigeration system.
  • Prepare and maintain logs, reports or other documentation of work performed.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High School Graduate or equivalent.
  • Experience: 4 years in installation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, including 2 years of large system maintenance and repair of HVAC chiller systems up to 499 tons or larger and installation, operation, maintenance and repair of heating water or domestic hot water boiler systems up to 1,750,000 Gross BTU/hour‑output or larger.
  • Preferred:
    Experience in operation, maintenance, and repair of Building Automation systems. Related college education or technical training may substitute for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
