This position performs journeyman electrician licensed level work in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical circuits and systems. It involves installing new systems and repairing existing ones, developing preventive maintenance schedules, and performing specialized tests, all in accordance with adopted building codes and using appropriate safety procedures.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the first of two electrician‑related job classifications within the Skilled Trades job family. The role may require work in secure facilities, a flexible work schedule, and the ability to meet departmental needs.

• Respond to requests for system repairs.
• Inspect, maintain and repair electrical systems and motors/generators; make recommendations for replacements.
• Plan and develop routine preventive maintenance schedules.
• Research and estimate time and materials needed; record usage.
• Obtain required building permits for new system construction.
• Operate technical test equipment (DC high‑voltage testers, multi‑channel analog recorders, electronic meters, vibration test equipment) and perform special tests to diagnose equipment/circuit problems.
• Execute additional job‑related duties as assigned.

High School diploma or GED plus 2 to 4 years of experience in the installation and repair of electrical control equipment, lighting fixtures and systems, motors, HVAC electrical systems, and other electrical equipment.

OR a combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the stated level.

• State of Texas Electrician Journeyman License (must be obtained within six months of hire).
• Valid Texas Driver’s License.
• Pass a criminal background check for CJIS clearance; required to pass background investigation with fingerprint clearance.
• Work PM and overnight shifts as needed.

Knowledge of:

• Electrical codes, terminology, practices and procedures.
• Standard electrical maintenance and repair methods, materials, tools, and equipment.
• Computer equipment and software (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, etc.).
• Business letter writing, grammar, punctuation, and report preparation.

Skills in:

• Operating and standard electrical tools and test equipment.
• Installing and maintaining electrical work.
• Reading and interpreting schematics and blueprints.
• Adhering to safety practices, procedures and regulations.
• Working collaboratively within a team.
• Explaining complicated problems in simple, non‑technical language.

Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry up to 50 pounds, and visual acuity, speech, hearing, hand and eye coordination, and manual dexterity required to operate a computer and office equipment. Performance may require standing, walking, sitting, reaching, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, repetitive motion, pulling, driving, twisting, balancing, client/customer contact, squatting, and working in cramped or confined spaces for extended periods.

Contact with hazardous waste, foul odors, fauna, and contaminated materials may occur. Work may be indoors/outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat and cold; working at heights from ladders and scaffolds is required. Separate routine job functions may be assigned to business continuity efforts outside normal duties.

Work Hours:

Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM (with possible evenings, overnight, holidays as needed). Works some holidays, some nights, some weekends.
