Description
Role Mission:
The Food Service Specialist ensures that appropriate quantities of food are prepared, portioned, and served to IDEA students. Other responsibilities include: cutting/chopping fruits & vegetables, following recipes, adhering to established kitchen processes, monitoring of students during meal periods (e.g., monitoring for appropriate behavior, encouraging students to consume more fresh fruits & vegetables, no sharing of food), and kitchen cleaning duties (sweeping, mopping, wiping tables, washing dishes, disposing of trash).
- Prepare, portion, and serve appropriate quantities of food for IDEA students.
- Cut and chop fruits and vegetables; follow recipes and kitchen processes.
- Monitor students during meal periods (behavior, encourage consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, no sharing of food).
- Perform kitchen cleaning duties (sweeping, mopping, wiping tables, washing dishes, disposing of trash).
- Education:
High School Diploma Preferred but Not Required. - Experience:
1+ years in a role requiring physical activity or standing for multiple hours. - License or Certification:
Food Handler’s Permit (City of County) preferred.
- Ability to understand food recipes, safe handling of food and sanitation practices.
- Working knowledge of kitchen/food production procedures.
- Ability to operate kitchen equipment, tools, and utensils.
- Ability to perform basic math skills.
- Works well under pressure in a team setting.
- Ability to lift, bend, pull, push, twist.
Possess an interest or passion for working with food. Can meet the physical demands of the job (lifting, bending, walking, etc.).
- Has a basic knowledge of food production processes and can learn quickly.
- Performs cooking, cleaning, restocking, and resets the kitchen for the next day.
- Reads and executes recipes; able to handle medium to large equipment (ovens, slicer, steamer, etc.).
- Has basic math skills related to portioning food items in small trays.
- Takes pride in food prepared and served to students.
- Can take direction and feedback well; adaptable to changes (e.g., switching from serving to washing dishes).
- Open to feedback, especially mid-year and end-of-year reviews; self-reflective with a desire to improve.
- Can work around an academic calendar with periods of reduced or no work (e.g., breaks).
- During regular school days, 8 hours per day with some overtime; may require Saturdays depending on campus.
