Overview
Position is with the Archeological Services Team based in Austin, Texas. The role requires travel across the state to conduct surveys, site testing, data recovery, and monitoring to support State Parks development and visitor experiences while maintaining compliance with the State Antiquities Code and applicable federal preservation laws.
Responsibilities- Conduct archaeological field reconnaissance surveys, pedestrian surveys with shovel testing, site testing, data recovery, excavation, and monitoring of construction activities for potential archaeological deposits.
- Perform field investigations under the direction of the Team Lead, Principal Investigator, Project Archaeologist, or regional coordinator.
- Conduct archival research and prepare and write technical reports to Council of Texas Archeologists standards.
- Operate GPS equipment and GIS for map production and analysis.
- Assist in artifact analysis and documentation.
- Present outreach activities to the public and at professional meetings.
- Supervise the work of crew as a Project Archaeologist when required.
- Work under limited supervision with latitude for initiative and independent judgement.
- Perform additional duties as assigned and comply with all Agency rules and procedures.
- Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field from an accredited four‑year college or university.
- Two years of progressively responsible archaeological fieldwork experience, including artifact analysis and report preparation.
- Valid Texas Class "C" driver’s license, to be obtained within 30 days of employment.
- Four years of progressively responsible archaeological experience in fieldwork and report writing.
- Experience working with all‑terrain vehicles, driving and operating trailers.
- Experience recording above ground structures and features, especially buildings.
- Knowledge of archaeological field data collection techniques, materials and tools, and laboratory procedures.
