Role Description

The Department of Physics invites applications for the position of Director of the Institute for Fusion Studies (IFS). Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in Physics or related discipline and must demonstrate creativity, vision and leadership abilities.

Responsibilities
  • Manage the research progress of Center's research scientists and graduate research assistants to fulfill mission of federally sponsored grants; collaborate and communicate results with other Institute scientists; present at seminars and other scientific activities.
  • Author annual progress report for the IFS DOE Block Grant, and every 3 years author the renewal submission; organize input from IFS research scientists and postdocs; supervise publication details, graduate program, visitor program, etc.
  • Attend conferences and workshops to present research results and promote research activities; collaborate with external scientists; represent the UT Fusion Program to US Congress; participate in committees, journal referee, grant proposal reviews, conference organization.
  • Recruit and hire personnel; conduct promotions and reductions in force; conduct annual performance evaluations for all research staff; make merit increase recommendations.
  • Develop and apply physics models for plasma dynamics; compare theoretical models and experimental results; write and publish research results in refereed journals.
  • Serve on Physics Department Committees as requested; support educational mission by providing graduate and undergraduate students with research training opportunities.
  • Manage Center's funds, especially IFS DOE grant and ICR funds; manage use of Center's discretionary account.
  • Prepare detailed report for ORU reviews every 6 years as required under HOP 7‑1030 and schedule by the Dean.
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Physics.
  • A body of scientific research published in refereed scientific journals.
  • Professional demeanor and ability to represent the Center at College, University and external levels.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience at the associate director level managing scientific and administrative staff.
  • Experience teaching Physics courses.
Salary Range

$180,000 – $225,000 DOE

Working Conditions
  • Some lifting and moving of equipment may be required.
  • May work in standard office conditions.
