Post Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU) Technician, AVES
Join Our Growing Team at Austin Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center! We are rapidly expanding, adding new doctors, services, and a brand‑new 45,000 sq. ft. hospital. We are seeking self‑motivated, team‑oriented veterinary technicians to support cutting‑edge veterinary medicine in a collaborative, inclusive environment.

Patient Care Personnel (PCP) play a vital role in supporting practitioners by assisting with technical procedures and administrative tasks. Your contributions enhance patient care quality and improve efficiency for specialists. PCPs are responsible for compassionate, responsible care to all AVES patients, including monitoring, treatment, and detailed record‑keeping throughout hospitalization. Strong communication skills are essential for collaboration with doctors, Client Patient Coordinators, Veterinary Assistants, and fellow PCPs.
Daily cleaning and stocking of common areas are required to maintain AVES’ high standards of care. This position demands a dependable, energetic individual capable of multitasking in a fast‑paced, high‑stress environment.
- Provide restraint of pets for examination and treatment by veterinarians
- Prepare medications (injectable and oral) for outpatients and inpatients
- Complete all necessary paperwork for surgical and in‑house procedures
- Calculate drug dosages
- Log out and administer controlled substances
- Pull all packs and equipment for minor procedures and set up in the treatment area
- Provide supportive therapy to patients in recovery and post‑operatively
- Administer all medications and treatments written on each patient’s daily plan per doctors’ orders
- Take dictation from doctors to record the report and post‑operative treatments
- Clean the recovery area after a procedure so it is ready for the next case
- Assist doctors with medical or minor surgical procedures such as irrigating wounds, medicating, and bandaging
- Perform clinical laboratory procedures (PCV, TP, Azot, blood chemistries) using Idexx analyzer; collect samples and submit to Antech Lab
- Maintain a file of lab test results and ensure records are updated
- Record all diagnostics and treatments accurately in the patient chart
- Communicate information professionally between doctors, clients, and staff when doctors are unavailable
- Recognize knowledge limits and seek help when needed
- Teach clients oral, eye, ear medication administration and subcutaneous injections or fluids
- Document all client interactions in patient files; initial all entries
- Schedule surgery, imaging, appointments, or other procedures per hospital policy
- Maintain anesthesia machines and monitors
- Access digital radiographs using Qlink software; operate portable and stationary digital radiography units
- Assist kennel personnel in keeping patients clean and dry
- Receive patients into recovery after surgery and assume their care after transfer from anesthesia PCPs
- Accurately record, maintain, and review medical records, including daily plans, diagnostics, notes, and invoicing services
- Communicate patient status to doctors, other PCPs, and clients
- Submit all lab samples and request forms to Antech Lab
- Report equipment issues (Idexx chemistry, oxygen cages, heated cages) to the Tech Lead
- Assist other PCPs as needed
- Restock supplies in PACU and other hospital areas in preparation for the next day
- Prepare patients for discharge, ensuring they are well‑groomed and medically stable
- Maintain cleanliness and order in all areas of the hospital; perform daily and weekly cleaning duties
- Assist with inventory and inform management of items that need ordering
- Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) or experienced Veterinary Assistant with at least 2 years of experience; dedication to outstanding client service and patient care
- Prior experience in an emergency or specialty hospital is preferred
