Position: Parks and Recreation Jobs - City of Austin, TX

Job Summary:

The City of Austin, TX, is looking for passionate and dedicated individuals to join its Parks and Recreation team. Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage and maintain city parks and recreational facilities, ensuring they are safe, clean, and functional for public use.
  • Oversee various recreational programs, including sports leagues, fitness classes, arts and crafts activities, and community events.
  • Assist with park events and community outreach programs aimed at promoting public wellness and engagement.
  • Monitor the condition of equipment and facilities, performing routine inspections and maintenance to ensure they meet safety and quality standards.
  • Support in the development of new parks and recreational spaces, including landscaping, site development, and community planning efforts.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to park visitors, handling inquiries and resolving any issues or concerns.
  • Collaborate with other city departments, local organizations, and stakeholders to improve the citys recreational offerings.
  • Ensure all activities comply with safety regulations, environmental standards, and city ordinances.
  • Participate in training programs to develop technical and leadership skills in parks and recreation management.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; some positions may require a degree or certification in Parks and Recreation, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team environment.
  • Knowledge of park operations, recreation program management, and basic landscaping techniques.
  • Experience working in customer service or a public-facing role is a plus.
  • Ability to operate basic park equipment, including lawnmowers, maintenance tools, and recreational apparatus.
  • First Aid and CPR certification, or the ability to obtain certification upon hire.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle conflicts or unexpected situations effectively.
Experience:
  • Previous experience in parks and recreation, landscaping, sports coaching, or similar fields is preferred but not required.
  • Experience in customer service or community-focused roles is a plus.
Working Hours:
  • Full-time and part-time positions available.
  • Typical working hours are from Monday to Friday, with occasional evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts required depending on program needs.
  • Flexibility is essential to accommodate special events and park maintenance schedules.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of local parks and recreation regulations, safety practices, and environmental considerations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with diverse groups of people, including city staff, community members, and volunteers.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to think critically and make decisions quickly in fast-paced or high-pressure situations.
  • Good organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities simultaneously.
