Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) – Travis County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) – Austin, TX

Job Summary

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office offers a safe, fast‑paced learning environment for licensed vocational nurses. LVNs are expected to deliver quality medical services to an appreciative patient population and work as part of a secure correctional health team. The position is available immediately at the Travis County Correctional Complex in Del Valle and the Travis County Jail in Austin.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Respond to patients’ medical needs and provide or arrange treatment per protocol and directions from authorized medical staff.
  • Consult with clinical and administrative staff regarding patient health‑care issues.
  • Assess emergent patient illnesses and injuries and offer appropriate care.
  • Perform direct health‑care to patients, including wound care, medication administration, vital‑sign monitoring, and laboratory procedures.
  • Assist other medical staff as required.
  • Practice safety, environmental, and infection control methods.
  • Document patient conditions and maintain medical files and records in computer; perform other administrative duties.
  • Inventory medications daily.
  • Assist in dental, STD, and other clinic settings.
  • Answer medical questions from staff, patients’ relatives, and others as appropriate.
  • Screen and evaluate patients’ medical and mental histories during processing into the facility.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, including bathing and feeding.
  • Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements

Graduation from an accredited Licensed Vocational Nursing program and one (1) year of Licensed Vocational Nursing experience. Current license to practice as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in Texas. Current CPR certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of
  • Standard nursing and other health‑care practices.
  • Policies, practices, procedures, and terminology related to nursing and health‑care.
  • Federal, State, Local, and County nursing and health‑care laws and requirements.
  • Treatment of a variety of diseases and injuries.
  • Proper medication dosages and expected results.
  • Proper infection control techniques, mental health procedures, and protocols.
  • Principles and procedures of medical documentation and record keeping.
  • Computer equipment, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, and a variety of software packages.
  • HIPAA and other federal and state laws requiring confidential handling of certain health information.
Skill in
  • Administering daily patient care, including use of stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, thermometer, and other medical instruments.
  • Administering CPR and First Aid.
  • Performing medical tests and recording results accurately.
  • Assisting mental health patients.
  • Problem‑solving and decision‑making.
  • Verbal and written communication.
Ability to
  • Work efficiently both independently and as part of a medical team.
  • Recognize and identify health symptoms.
  • Exercise sound judgment and react quickly in emergency situations.
  • Manage time well and perform multiple tasks.
  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions and communicate concisely.
  • Work in a secure environment.
  • Track medication use and inventory procedures.
  • Chronicle medical histories and enter data into computer.
  • Work effectively and courteously under high‑pressure circumstances.
  • Deal with mentally disturbed, hostile, and aggressive individuals.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the general public.
Work Environment & Other Information

Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry up to 35–100 pounds occasionally, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination, and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer and office equipment. Subject to standing, walking, sitting, repetitive motion, reaching, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, balancing, client/customer contact, and squatting to perform essential functions. Subject to contact with communicable diseases, radiation, hazardous waste, human fecal matter, and foul odors.

Travis County employees may be assigned to business continuity efforts outside normal job functions. ***$3.00 per hour shift differential for B&C shift assignments and all weekend shifts. Shift assignment will depend on availability at hiring time.**
* Work hours:

various shifts, holidays, nights, and weekends. Drug test and alcohol test required. Criminal, credit, driving, education, and employment background checks required.
