The Machinist Apprentice is responsible for fabricating precision components used in life-saving medical devices. Working from technical drawings and CAD models, the machinist apprentice helps develop CNC code using Master Cam to machine moderately complex parts. This role requires assisting the Machinist in setting up and operating CNC grinders, mills, and lathes
, as well as proficiency with manual machining equipment and inspection tools.
The Machinist Apprentice will assist the Machinist to ensure all fabricated parts meet exact specifications by applying rigorous attention to detail and utilizing advanced quality control methods. Beyond technical execution, this position assist in providing guidance to Machine Operators, supports continuous improvement initiatives, and collaborates closely with engineering and quality teams to maintain compliance with medical device manufacturing standards.
A machinist apprentice helps the Lead Machinist and Supervisor by independently handling routine machining tasks, ensuring quality, maintaining organization, and communicating proactively. This will allow the Machinist and Supervisor to focus on high‑complexity work and overall workflow.
Responsibilities- Fabrication Planning:
Reviewing technical drawings and CAD models to determine optimal machining methods, including required machines, tools, and fixtures. - Tooling & Programming:
Identify and secure necessary tooling; develop CNC programs using Master Cam and generate accurate code for part fabrication. - Machine Operation:
Set up and operate CNC and manual mills, lathes, and grinders to produce precision components that meet medical device specifications. - Inspection & Quality Assurance:
Conduct dimensional inspections using micrometers, test indicators, optical comparators, toolmakers’ microscopes, and reverse molds when required; ensure all parts meet drawing tolerances. - Adjustments & Documentation:
Make tooling and machine adjustments as needed; document inspection results and maintain detailed notes for traceability. - Problem-Solving & Maintenance:
Collaborate with management to resolve equipment or process issues; perform periodic maintenance tasks as directed. - Customer & Production Support:
Discuss prospective jobs with internal customers, recommend design modifications to simplify manufacturing, and assist with production machining when required. - Process Development:
Contribute to writing procedures, process documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives; suggest enhancements to equipment and workflows. - Innovation & New Products:
Support the development of new products and technologies through machining expertise and process input. - Team
Collaboration:
Work effectively with machine operators to resolve problems; foster positive relationships with peers and respond constructively to feedback. - Leadership & Workflow Management:
Carry out leadership responsibilities in alignment with organizational policies and applicable laws; manage workflow in assigned areas to ensure efficiency and compliance. - Time Management:
Prioritize tasks and manage time effectively to meet production and quality goals.
- Minimum 1 year as a CNC machinist in a production environment (preferred).
- At least 2 years of experience in machining operations (required).
- 1+ years working with medical devices or other highly regulated products (preferred).
- Technical Expertise
- Demonstrated ability to generate CNC code from CAD models using Master Cam or similar CAM software (preferred).
