We are seeking a high‑integrity Controller to manage the financial health of our $12M masonry firm. You will not just manage the books; you will manage the margins
. This role requires a deep dive into project‑level data, rigorous subcontractor compliance, and a relentless focus on Work in Progress (WIP) accuracy. You will be the primary bridge between our field foremen, our estimators, and the executive team. Most work will be performed on a Remote basis, and you will have standing meetings with the Executive Teams.
- Subcontractor Management:
Oversee the full lifecycle of sub‑contracts. Ensure all insurance (COIs), workers' comp, and master service agreements are current before a single dollar is paid. - Lien Waiver Oversight:
Implement a strict process for collecting partial and final lien waivers from lower‑tier subs and suppliers to protect the company from Texas lien claims. - Margin Analysis & WIP:
Maintain the monthly WIP schedule. You must be able to identify "fading margins" early by comparing actual labor/material costs against original estimates. - Cash Flow & Pay Apps:
Manage the AIA billing process (G702/G703). You will ensure pay applications are submitted accurately and on time to General Contractors to maintain a healthy cash cycle. - Job Costing Mastery:
Verify that all field hours and material deliveries (brick, block, stone, sand) are coded correctly to specific jobs. - Financial Reporting:
Perform full‑cycle month‑end close. WIP Schedules, Percent of Completion Revenue recognition. Provide Stakeholders with clear "KPIs" highlighting job profitability, overhead burn rates, and cash forecasts. - Payroll and Certified Payroll:
Ensure compliance across the board between Contractors and Employees and report weekly certified payroll.
- Experience:
5+ years of accounting experience in Construction (Masonry, Concrete, or Structural experience is a significant plus). - Software:
Expert‑level proficiency in Quick Books Online and advanced Excel (must be able to build formulas for WIP and cash forecasting). - The "Texas Factor":
Deep understanding of Texas Lien Laws and sales tax exemptions for capital improvement projects. - Education:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance preferred. - Attributes:
You must be comfortable telling a Project Manager "no" when documentation is missing and comfortable presenting "hard truths" about project performance to ownership.
Austin remains a competitive market with a cost of living that sits above the Texas average. For a $12M specialty contractor, the 2026 salary expectations are:
Compensation Breakdown- Base Salary
: $110,000 – $120,000 - Performance Bonus
: $5,000 – $10,000 (Tied to net profit/margin retention) - Total Target Comp
: $115,000 – $130,000
