Automotive Mechanic
Primary Purpose
Help mechanics repair and maintain all vehicles. Carry out assigned duties to ensure all vehicles and equipment are safely maintained.
Minimum Qualifications Education/CertificationHigh school diploma or GED (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or Regional Accrediting Agency)
Valid Texas driver’s license (B-CDL) with school bus and passenger endorsement
Shall be subject to testing for use of alcohol or controlled substance that violate law or federal regulations
Bus Driver Certification from TEA
Must have a safe driving record verified by Teas Department of Public Safety (meets and maintains liability coverage eligibility)
Shall be subject to testing for use of alcohol or controlled substance that violate law or federal regulations
Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50) paid
by employee.
Experience RequiredMinimum of one (1) year experience in minor vehicle repair and maintenance
Knowledge/SkillsAbility to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam
Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and perform repairs with supervision
Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair
Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts
Ability to operate a bus

The mechanic helper manages administrative, fiscal, and facilities functions responsibly through activities such as the following:
- Perform mechanical repairs or work under supervision of a mechanic to repair or replace tires, bulbs, fluids and accessories.
- Disassemble simple components and clean parts for reassembly.
- Request parts and tools for mechanics as needed.
- Check fluid levels and replace oil, water, battery, and other fluids as needed.
- Help maintain accurate, updated records of preventive and routine maintenance.
- Inspect, repair, change, and rotate tires.
- Clean shop floors, stalls, driveways, tools, and equipment.
- Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to established safety procedures.
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
The mechanic helper driver manages vehicle operations and responsibilities through activities such as the following:
- Operate buses and district vehicles as needed, including driving buses into shop area for work, driving routes and field trips.
The mechanic helper participates in professional growth and development through activities such as the following:
- Attend any specified meetings or professional development to improve job performance.
The mechanic helper exhibits qualities such as the following:
- Shall comply with District policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
- Shall comply with the standards of conduct set out in Board Policy DH (Legal) and (Local) and with any other policies, regulations, and guidelines that impose duties, requirements, and standards.
