Law Clerk (Intern)

Develop your skills with a dynamic team of legal professionals h more than $250 billion in premiums in 2023, Texas is the nation’s second largest insurance market and the fifth largest in the world. The Enforcement Section is hiring a law clerk to support TDI in administrative litigation at the State Office of Administrative Hearings. You will work with attorneys and investigators in developing cases against various insurance industry participants for disciplinary action.

You will learn valuable litigation skills and all about administrative law. You will also learn substantive insurance areas such as health market regulation, homeowners and auto policies, and insurance rates. You will be at the forefront of insurance regulation and have the chance to shape policies and regulations that impact the daily lives of Texans.

This full‑time, paid position provides a unique opportunity to gain exposure to the various types of legal careers within TDI, including administrative hearings and disciplinary cases, preparing legal memoranda, and legal research and writing. Through this position, you will build your professional and communications skills and receive hands‑on experience in administrative law. This temporary, full‑time position is in Austin and requires 40 hours a week, with two days per week of in‑office attendance at the Barbara Jordan Building required.

This temporary position will begin around June 1 and end on or before August 14, 2026.

The Enforcement Section provides training and a positive, collaborative work culture. An ideal candidate will have excellent legal research and writing skills, the ability to interpret state and federal laws and apply them to novel legal problems, and the ability to draft thorough and plain‑language legal documents. The candidate will be detail‑oriented and an excellent communicator, with good collaboration skills and judgment in the analysis of legal risks.

The ideal candidate will show a willingness and ability to take on new challenges and subject matter.

Position Responsibilities
  • Conduct legal research and prepare legal documents for use in litigation, policy making, and other areas.
  • Assist attorneys and investigators in investigating and preparing contested cases for hearing or settlement.
  • Research and interpret state statutes, agency regulations, and federal laws.
  • Provide general legal support such as redacting confidential information for document production and reviewing and editing documents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a degree.
  • Graduation from or currently pursuing a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Completion of a minimum of two semesters of law school prior to start of position (transcripts required with application).
  • Regular work attendance.
