DescriptionScale Computing is seeking a mid‑level Cloud Engineer to modernize and simplify our multi‑cloud infrastructure by transforming legacy systems into scalable, AWS‑ and GCP‑native services.
AboutThe Role
This hybrid position is based in either Austin, TX or Tallahassee, FL and will reduce our EC2 and Compute Engine footprint, eliminate technical debt, and shift workloads toward serverless platforms such as Lambda, Fargate, Cloud Run, and other managed services.
What You’ll Do- Decompose EC2‑ and Compute Engine‑hosted legacy systems and re‑architect components into AWS‑ and GCP‑native services (Lambda, ECS/Fargate, Cloud Run, Cloud Functions, S3, Cloud Storage, SQS, Pub/Sub, etc.).
- Refactor infrastructure for scalability, modularity, and cost efficiency across both clouds.
- Identify and eliminate underutilized compute resources to reduce EC2 and VM footprint.
- Build and maintain multi‑cloud infrastructure with Terraform and manage configuration using Puppet.
- Standardize deployments across AWS and GCP environments with reusable modules and CI/CD automation pipelines.
- Maintain clear, version‑controlled documentation for all infrastructure components and workflows.
- Implement alerting, logging, and compliance monitoring using AWS Cloud Watch, Cloud Trail, AWS Config, GCP Cloud Monitoring, and Cloud Logging.
- Enforce security best practices through IAM/Cloud IAM policies, Security Group and VPC‑level configurations, and secrets management with AWS Secrets Manager and GCP Secret Manager.
Required Qualifications
- 3‑5 years of experience as a Cloud, Dev Ops, or Platform Engineer in production environments.
- Strong hands‑on experience with AWS (EC2, Lambda, IAM, VPC, S3, Cloud Watch, etc.) and/or GCP (Compute Engine, Cloud Run, Cloud Functions, Cloud Storage, Cloud Monitoring, etc.).
- Proficiency with Terraform for Infrastructure as Code and Puppet for configuration management.
- Demonstrated experience modernizing legacy infrastructure and reducing reliance on EC2 and traditional VM‑based workloads.
- Scripting experience in Python or Bash for automation and tooling.
- Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, IAM/Cloud IAM, and Linux‑based systems.
- Ability to work 3 days per week in office, core hours of Monday‑Friday, 8AM‑6PM local time.
- Cloud certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect Associate, AWS Dev Ops Engineer, or Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect / Dev Ops Engineer.
- Experience with containerized and serverless workloads using ECS, Fargate, SQS, Event Bridge, Step Functions, Cloud Run, Pub/Sub, or Cloud Scheduler.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automation tools such as Git Hub Actions, AWS Code Pipeline, or Google Cloud Build.
- Experience operating in hybrid or multi‑cloud environments, including migrations and transitional architectures between AWS and GCP.
- Knowledge of monolith decomposition strategies (e.g., Strangler Fig, service extraction, or domain‑driven refactoring).
- Bachelor's in Computer Science / Computer Information Systems or equivalent experience.
