Job Summary

TSC does not sponsor work visas. The Network Engineer is responsible for setting up and maintaining computer networks at Texas Southmost College. Primary duties include installing, configuring, and supporting firewalls, routers, access points, cables, and switches to ensure network operation and security across the entire campus. The role also provides technical and administrative support for networks and related systems, performs wireless surveys, manages inventory, writes documentation, provides technical support to campus users and external departments, monitors network availability and performance, and manages a vulnerability tracking process for timely problem resolution.

As a member of the information technology department, this position handles incoming support requests, participates in operational projects, collaborates with other departments to provide network services to the campus community, and may be involved in on‑call rotation and after‑hours maintenance.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Ensure stability and integrity of in‑house voice, data, video, and wireless network services, supporting architecture, configuration, implementation, support, and maintenance of technologies.
  • Display expertise in network routing and switching design; knowledge of networking and security standards; proven success with LAN and WAN design and implementation.
  • Work closely with systems analysts and security teams at a high level.
  • Create and maintain documentation relating to network configuration, network mapping, processes, and service records while implementing policies, procedures, and training plans for network administration.
  • Oversee new and existing equipment, hardware, and software upgrades; interact and negotiate with vendors, outsource rs, and contractors to secure network products and services.
  • Resolve problems of diverse scope, applying analytical evaluation and judgment.
  • Act as an escalation point for User Services, Application Systems, and Information Security team members.
  • Assist the Technical Director and the Vice President of Information Technology in determining financial requirements for network operation.
  • Build and maintain a Network Operation Center (NOC) for the Information Technology department.
  • Maintain excellent communications with internal customers, IT resources, external partners, consultants, and support teams.
  • Track and understand emerging engineering practices; participate in educational opportunities, professional organizations, and industry publications.
  • Monitor network performance and trends, determining appropriate actions to resolve short‑term or long‑term issues using monitoring tools.
  • Escalate issues with broader implications for the entire networking environment to senior leadership as required.
  • Maintain and promote information security best practices under the direction of the Chief Information Security Officer.
  • Lift up to 35 pounds; perform occasional after‑hours and weekend work.
  • Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals in English with proper grammar and spelling.
  • Present information and respond to questions from employees, faculty, and students as required.
  • Deliver high‑level customer service according to the Department of Information Technology and Texas Southmost College policies.
  • Provide updates and status to management on a regular basis regarding all assigned incidents, requests, and projects.
  • Coordinate activities with Technical Help Desk, System Administrators, Network Services, Enterprise Application Services, and other team members.
  • Provide consultative support to end users related to business operations and software systems, offering training as needed.
  • Produce documentation surrounding operational processes and improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned; provide direction to staff regarding sensitive or complex work.
  • Pursue professional development through internal or external courses; maintain required credentials, licensing, and continuing education hours.
  • Participate collegially in discipline‑specific activities developed for information technology.
  • Attend the workplace regularly, report to work punctually, and follow a work schedule that may include evenings or weekends.
Physical Demands

Essential for the role: frequent standing, occasional walking, sitting, use of hands to finger, handle or feel objects, use of hands and arms to reach, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear, and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
