HSCS is comprised of ten psychiatric hospitals, two youth residential treatment facilities, and thirteen state supported living centers. - Directs strategic operations and planning to ensure the delivery of high-quality medical services to individuals served by SHs; coordinates care with other hospital programs and develops statewide clinical policies and procedures.
- Establishes proactive guidance for preventive and acute care for individuals with serious mental illness and trains staff on policies and related forms; monitors policy effectiveness.
- Trains on medical policies and procedures; reviews and monitors quality improvement plans; analyzes data for trends and implements solutions to improve medical department performance.
- Advises the Chief Medical Officer, Director of Operations, and Associate Commissioner on emerging infectious disease and other medical issues; disseminates treatment trend information and develops staff training.
- Provides technical assistance to state hospitals and HSCS contracted facilities.
- Reviews admission decisions regarding medical needs and hospital capacity to meet those needs.
- Leads quality assurance activities and coordinates internal and external review processes; conducts onsite visits to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Develops and coordinates quality improvement plans to strengthen medical department performance and outcomes.
- Reviews guidance and best practices (e.g., CDC) and issues medical opinions to improve operations and resource allocation; participates in interagency committees.
- Consults on unusual or difficult medical cases; assists with Clinical Death Reviews and Ethics Committee meetings; reviews patient records to assess treatment progress and appropriateness.
- Provides leadership to promote collaboration across medical and clinical areas; chairs or contributes to interdisciplinary committees and analyzes data to identify trends and issues.
