CENTRAL TEXAS VETERINARY SPECIALTY & EMERGENCY HOSPITAL is looking for a Technician Assistant to join their Ophthalmology Department in South Austin, TX.
The Veterinary Ophthalmology Technician Assistant provides specialized technical and patient care support within an emergency and specialty hospital environment. This role assists veterinarians and credentialed technicians in ophthalmic diagnostics, perioperative care, and ongoing patient monitoring. The assistant ensures that patients receive high-quality, timely, and medically appropriate care, while supporting efficient hospital operations in a fast‑paced, high‑acuity setting.
Patient Care & Handling- Safely and effectively restrain canine, feline, and exotic patients for ophthalmic exams, diagnostics, and emergency procedures.
- Assist in administration of topical, oral, and injectable medications under supervision.
- Provide attentive postoperative and hospitalized patient care
, including:- Monitoring and recording vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, pain level, hydration status).
- Administering medications and ophthalmic drops as prescribed by the veterinarian or technician.
- Ensuring patient comfort, assessing recovery progress, and reporting abnormalities promptly.
- Walking patients for elimination, mobility assessment, and recovery support.
- Support drop‑off and emergency appointments, including patient intake, baseline vitals, brief history, and preparation for urgent diagnostics or procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety of treatment areas, kennels, and patient rooms.
- Prepare and assist with ophthalmic diagnostics and emergency procedures, including:
- Schirmer tear test
- Fluorescein stain application
- Tonometry (rebound/applanation)
- Electroretinography (ERG) setup and monitoring
- Set up IV catheter supplies for surgical patients
- Administer pre‑op medications and eye medications throughout the day
- Assist in preparation and maintenance of surgical instruments and sterile fields.
- Support technicians and veterinarians during ophthalmic surgeries and emergent interventions.
- Assist in rapid preparation and handling of patients requiring urgent ophthalmic care.
- Assist and provide assistance with other specialty departments (internal medicine, emergency & critical care, surgery) when not on with Ophthalmology.
- Record and monitor patient information, including vital signs, medications administered, and clinical observations on Smart Flow and Ezy Vet.
- Communicate findings promptly to veterinarians and technicians, especially for emergent cases.
- Relay discharge instructions and post‑op care instructions to clients as directed by veterinary staff.
- Assist with documentation for emergency cases, specialty procedures, and ongoing hospital records.
- Maintain and clean ophthalmic diagnostic and surgical equipment.
- Monitor inventory of ophthalmic medications, surgical supplies, and emergency disposables; restock as needed.
- Ensure exam rooms, treatment areas, and surgical suites are prepared, organized, and stocked for rapid patient turnover.
- Follow hospital protocols for sterilization, PPE use, and infection control in a high‑acuity environment.
- Assist with scheduling, check‑ins, patient flow, and coordination between emergency and specialty teams.
- Prepare and label medications, diagnostic materials, and laboratory samples accurately under supervision.
- Contribute to efficient hospital workflow in a fast‑paced, emergency‑focused setting.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional veterinary or medical training preferred.
- Prior experience in emergency, specialty, or high‑acuity veterinary settings is highly preferred.
- Strong competence in animal handling, patient monitoring, and basic medical procedures.
- Ability to follow precise clinical instructions and maintain accuracy under pressure.
- Excellent observational, communication, and organizational skills.
- Physical ability to lift 40–50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and assist with patient restraint and mobility.
