Job Description

HHSC comprises nine psychiatric hospitals, one youth residential treatment facility, and thirteen state-supported living centers. The psychiatric hospitals provide recovery-oriented and science-based treatment and are accredited by The Joint Commission.
The Rehab Therapy Tech IV performs highly complex (senior-level) rehabilitative therapy work, assists in developing and implementing planned rehabilitation programs, and may provide guidance to other staff. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)- Attend work regularly and work a specific or rotating schedule; may include overtime as needed.
- Deliver quality rehabilitation programming to patients and assist leadership in screening applicants, interviewing, and onboarding qualified Rehabilitation Technicians; facilitate therapeutic activities and instruct patients in various therapies, fitness, swimming, arts and crafts, and team-building activities.
- Instruct patients in self-care, independent living, and character-building topics; maintain relationships with local colleges and community resources to support schedules for college visits and guest speakers.
- Provide accurate observation of patient behavior and participation; document progress in progress notes.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of patient needs; implement workshops and groups to meet those needs.
- Assist in training Rehabilitation Technicians; supervise as needed.
- Operate a state vehicle, transport patients, and ensure safety and logs for off-campus trips.
- Attend department meetings, participate in case formulations, and support special projects and events.
- Maintain equipment and supplies; conduct weekly checks and manage inventory and purchases.
- Develop and update curriculum and treatment plans; document updates to support treatment planning.
- Ensure facilities and grounds are safe and clean; coordinate with facilities for scheduling rehabilitation activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned, including disaster response or COOP activation; may involve alternate shifts or locations.
Skills and Abilities
(KSAs)
- Knowledge of rehabilitation activities and mental health concepts.
- Knowledge of regulations, policies, and procedures; ability to supervise others.
- Proficiency with computer hardware/software; ability to operate therapy equipment.
- Ability to evaluate patient participation and document progress; effective communication with patients, families, and staff; ability to instruct and train others.
- Valid Texas driver license or obtain within 90 days of hire; driving record requirements per HHSC policy.
- CPR certification.
- Certification as Rehab Therapy Technician (PTA) or obtain within one year may be required.
- Two years of experience with mental illness or developmental disabilities; experience developing treatment and support plans preferred.
- Background checks, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks; certain age and immunization requirements apply. Federal and state compliance with immunization policy is required.
- Applicants must pass fingerprinting, CANRS, and LEIE checks;
Selective Service registration for males 18-25. - Flexibility in work hours; overtime/extended hours may be required.
