Texas Neuro Rehab Center is currently accepting applications for an Occupational Therapist (OT) on the Behavioral Unit. An OT provides occupational therapy services to patients in an efficient and professional manner and therapeutically facilitates purposeful occupational role performances of patients in order to improve both physical and mental functioning abilities.
Texas Neuro Rehab Center is a specialized treatment facility located ten minutes from downtown Austin on 67 wooded acres. The center provides complex medical and brain and spinal cord injury rehabilitation for ages 13 and older and neuropsychiatric treatment for youth, offering integrated and specialized care for children, adolescents, and adults facing difficult challenges.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Requires a thorough knowledge of human development, human anatomy & physiology, kinesiology, and the effect of treatment procedures on body functions, structure, and occupation. For employment on the medical units, knowledge of neurodevelopment treatment and motor control and understanding of neurological dysfunction and its effect on motor performance. Knowledge of traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular accidents, neuropsychological and physical disability evaluations and how to conduct appropriate Occupational Therapy intervention.
For employment on the neuropsychiatric units, knowledge of sensory processing and sensory motor disorders, its impact on developmental and psychosocial skills, and appropriate treatment interventions. Basic understanding of psychosocial skills and their impact on motivation, behavior control, interpersonal skills, and occupational performance. Basic understanding and comfort working with neuropsychiatric disorders such as PDD/Autism, Mental Retardation, ADHD, ODD, and Bipolar Disorder.
EDUCATION: Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: Current Driver’s License or State issued license from the Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiner required (LOT). Current certification from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy preferred (OTR).
EXPERIENCE: One-year experience in a neurorehabilitation setting.
PHYSICAL/GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: Able to sustain activity eight hours a day. Able to remain on feet eight hours per day. Able to confront a dangerous and aggressive patient. Able to verbally communicate to de-escalate a crisis situation, explain treatment to the patient to allow active participation, and to protect self and others from aggressive patients or other incidents. Able to restrain patients by individual or team restraint per facility policy.
Able to frequently lift, carry, and lower 50 pounds without assistance. Able to kneel, stoop, bend, and pull various weights or items (up to 50 pounds). Able to push patients in wheelchairs up and down hills, pursue running patients, and traverse hospital grounds. Able to transfer patients to and from wheelchairs. Able to visually observe so as to convey patient behavior verbally or in writing.
Able to write legibly and grammatically so as to convey patient behavior and information in the patient’s medical record. Able to read medical records and other reports. Able to use hands repetitively. Ability to use hands to grasp, type, and write (fine motor skills). Regular and expected attendance. Hearing and vision sufficient to perform essential job functions.
