As a vital part of the patient care team, the Respiratory Therapist performs a variety of diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures, monitors patients on invasive and noninvasive mechanical ventilation, and collaborates with physicians and allied health professionals.
Responsibilities- Perform and document patient assessment, including breath sounds, airway patency, and cuff pressure
- Conduct diagnostic procedures to evaluate respiratory therapy needs and responses
- Administer respiratory care therapies: oxygen delivery, aerosol medication delivery, chest physiotherapy
- Assist with placement of artificial airways; initiate, monitor and maintain mechanical ventilation
- Monitor patients for therapeutic responses; notify provider and intervene as appropriate
- Assist with transportation of ventilator‑dependent patients
- Respond to emergent patient situations to ensure airway integrity and adequate ventilation during resuscitation
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification obtained within 90 days of employment start date
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification (NBRC-RRT) or equivalent
- Associate degree in respiratory therapy or related field
