Engineer Specialist VI

The Engineering Specialist performs highly advanced (senior-level engineering work for the State Fire Marshal's Office and local authorities having jurisdiction. This position serves as the subject matter expert for the State Fire Marshal's Office on topics such as fire and life safety, fire resistance of materials used in construction and finish of buildings, fire ignition and growth of fire in structures, and equivalent means of protection and performance-based fire protection.

Conducts research and prepares analyses and reports related to fire and life safety. May be called upon to examine fire scenes and assist in determining potential competent ignitions sources and potential fire-related failure modes of systems. Provides customer service and outreach to entities and individuals requesting fire and life safety information as well as state regulation and adopted and legislated standards and codes.

Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

This position:

• Travel is required up to 75% of the time. If travel is over 10%, you must maintain a state of Texas Driver's License.

• Responds to or provides forensic analysis when needed on fire investigations such as fire fatalities, firefighter line-of-duty deaths, and complex incidents, as well as identifies and evaluates conditions that may pose a fire and life safety hazards.

• Respond to questions from the public, industry and fire service concerning technical requirements in the fire extinguisher, alarm, sprinkler, and fireworks industry.

• Prepares technical reports citing fire & life safety hazards and working conditions and advises State Fire Marshal and program staff on technical issues.

• Serves as subject matter expert on various fire & life safety codes and standards.

• Assist in the development and implementation of educational programs.

• Providing consultation and guidance to other State agencies and building tenants at multiple levels on fire & life safety issues.

• Manage projects that are technically complex and may be highly visible. Projects require technical proficiency as well as coordinative and administrative responsibility.

• May require coordinating the efforts of multi-discipline, multi-agency teams to complete an assignment.

• Formulates specific recommendations to eliminate or control identified hazards.

• Drives for extended periods of time, often in remote areas, travels with overnight stays.

• Provide customer service and outreach to entities and individuals requesting fire and life safety information.

• Attend training and research training for professional development.

• Prepares and submits administrative documentation, including activity reports, vehicle logs, travel vouchers, and inventory requests.
