Overview

Tax Senior Manager, Nonprofit at BDO USA. The Senior Manager advises clients on the tax implications of business objectives, evaluates and selects actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and identifies methods of complying with tax regulations. Serves as the primary client contact for complex nonprofit tax issues and applies knowledge to understand potential tax disclosure, exemption, and unrelated business income issues.

Recognizes and communicates potential risks and changes in tax policy, and makes top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. A critical member of the regional Nonprofit Tax team, actively participates in marketing and networking within their area of expertise while maintaining client relationships and serving as the primary contact for complex questions.

Job Duties
  • Tax Compliance
    • Ensure clients comply with applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens; ensure Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM) are followed by self and client service teams.
    • Review tax returns (T/Rs) and resolve tax issues with the client; involve specialists as appropriate.
    • Plan for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues; consult with client and/or partner as appropriate.
    • Review Forms 990, 990-PF, and 990-T work papers and disclosures for audited financial statements.
    • Plan and review the tax process, including budgeting and staffing, engagement monitoring, timely billing, collections, and client communication; manage out-of-scope activity.
    • Manage client relationships/expectations in accordance with the project; provide timely advice to clients.
  • Research
    • Identify complex issues to be researched; frame issues clearly and report analyses concisely.
    • Involve firm specialists as appropriate.
  • Tax Consulting
    • Develop, recommend, and implement efficient methods to maximize client benefits by reducing current and future taxes.
    • Apply tax knowledge and business/industry understanding to recommend solutions.
    • Develop and implement work plans for Specialized Tax Services (STS) on ongoing client projects.
    • Serve as a technical resource to peers within the region.
    • Manage written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with minimal assistance.
    • Ensure client service teams comply with Firm policy regarding Written Tax Advice (WTA).
  • Strategy Development
    • Develop new or improved ideas to improve client and Firm position, including tax savings or nonprofit tax benefits.
    • Review studies of tax implications and offer alternative courses of action.
    • Research and implement nonprofit tax strategies, including testing promising new ideas; leverage lessons learned from prior projects to improve processes.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities
    • Supervise Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers on projects.
    • Review work and provide feedback; train team on current software tools and research skills.
    • Act as Career Advisor and manage workload; provide performance feedback.
  • Other duties as required
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics OR a Bachelor’s degree in any other focus area with CPA certification (required).
  • Master’s degree in Accountancy or Taxation (preferred).
  • Eight (8) or more years of nonprofit tax experience and/or related professional services experience; supervisory experience (required).
  • CPA certification, Attorney (admitted in U.S. jurisdiction), or Enrolled Agent (EA) or equivalent (required).
  • Microsoft Office proficiency (required); experience with tax research databases and tax compliance software (preferred).
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills; ability to delegate and lead a team; strong analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain client relationships; executive presence to act as primary client contact for issues and resolutions.
