Job Description & How to Apply Below

Overview

Hybrid. This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Pontiac, MI or Concord, NC three times per week, at minimum.

The Role

The Motorsports Propulsion Program Team is seeking a technical expert in engine simulation methods to lead the virtual engineering aspects of our sportscar engine programs. As a subject matter expert, you will be responsible for engine performance simulation and valve train analysis models using 1D virtual tools. Functions include model building, correlation and evaluation. You ll be managing multiple projects and providing technical insight into problem solving, leveraging the model results for hardware and calibration development.

This position requires a fundamental understanding of combustion engines and propulsion system modeling approach via GT-SUITE software. These propulsion models are the core estimation for performance and fuel efficiency for early vehicle architecture development. This role also leverages the large design of experiments and optimization using 1D modeling to solve complex and multivariable problems.

What You’ll Do
  • Develop 1D engine simulation models in GT-POWER of a V8 Sportscar (IMSA & WEC Competing) LMDh and GT3 engine architectures with complete intake and exhaust systems.
  • Simulate full and part-load models focusing on torque, power and fuel consumption
  • Process lab and model generated engine operating data (fuel mapping) into standardized format
  • Execute transient engine simulations to support engine control algorithm evaluation and/or development (HIL/SIL), and vehicle performance assessment
  • Create Medium or Fast Running Models (MRM / FRM) to support controls development activities
  • Develop new and innovative analytical techniques to model engine technologies (boost devices, exhaust gas recirculation, variable valve lift, emission control systems, aftertreatment etc.) with emphasis on minimizing test data requirements
  • Develop optimized valve lift profiles using parametric valve train design software
  • Provide component-level and/or system-level design recommendations to Design Responsible Engineers based on interpretation of analysis results
  • Participate in product design and development teams and regularly present analysis results to engineering peers and management
  • Appropriately distill 3D math data into 1D model geometry using the correct discretization techniques
  • Cooperatively work with test engineers to develop and/or enhance laboratory procedures to validate system analysis results
  • Contribute to the development of post-processing and automation tools using MATLAB and/or Python
What You’ll Need (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Computer Science, or Physics
  • Engine experience in high profile race series
  • 10 years of propulsion simulation and/or virtual engineering experience
  • Fundamental understanding of combustion engines and the modeling approach via GT-SUITE 1D CFD Software
  • Experience with engine dynamometer testing and data analysis
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • High comfort with ambiguity, developing new capabilities, and creating new standard work
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Master of Science in Engineering, Computer Science, or Physics
  • 10+ years’ experience with GT-POWER, WAVE, or similar software
  • Engine calibration, controls and model-based calibration techniques.
  • Engine testing and development experience
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult
  • Proficient with MATLAB, AVL software.
  • Programming experience and/or a strong desire to learn
  • Thorough understanding and skills to work at high level in all phases of the vehicle development process

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week. The selected candidate will be required to travel
