Varian Medical Systems, a Siemens Healthineers company, is seeking a Nuclear Engineer or Nuclear Chemist to join our Interventional Oncology (IO) development team. The individual will be a member of our growing embolics team focused on treating cancers by delivery of internal radiation therapy and occluding the blood supply to tumors. The individual would contribute by developing new implantable therapy and embolization products.
The ideal candidate would be self-driven with a passion for medical device development and a desire to work on products that change people’s lives.
- Develop prototype intravascular devices to demonstrate technical feasibility
- Lead all irradiation aspects of device design, including modeling activity and decay, defining activation needs to achieve treatment doses, and defining needs for shielding
- Support dosimetry models and confirmation studies
- Define detailed requirements for implantable products and methods
- Interface with imaging teams to optimize combined activity and imageability needs
- Lead reactor site agreements, hot cell development, analytical equipment needs, and shielding container development
- Develop and execute complex test plans involving significant data collection and interpretation, assessment of results, and incorporation of steps for continuous design improvements
- Support radiation safety needs and development, including licensing (NRC, DOT) and logistics
- Plan and conduct R&D activities to define and develop implantable devices
- Quality assurance testing of devices to ensure conformance to design specifications
- Write technical documentation including process descriptions and test methods
- Contribute to and maintain FDA compliant Design History Files (DHF)
- Execute process improvements as they relate to quality system compliance with FDA 510(k), QSR and ISO 13485
- Participate in complaint investigations and failure analysis of products
- Provide root cause analysis support and drive the implementation of corrective action for process-related issues
- Performs other duties as assigned or required
- MS in Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics, Nuclear Chemistry, or related field;
PhD preferred - 10+ years of engineering experience with preference for experience in medical device or other regulated industry
- Familiarity with the medical device Regulatory (FDA & MDD) and Quality (QSR & ISO 13485) issues or similarly regulated industry
- Expertise in neutron activation, activity modeling, and decay modeling of gamma and beta emitting sources
- Experience in nuclear chemistry and materials
- Knowledge of analytical methods for radiation measurements
- Experience interfacing with reactor sites for neutron activation, including defining needs and setting up agreements
- Experience in hot cell development
- Experience in designing shielding for radioactive devices
- Experience with radiation safety and handling requirements
- Knowledge of licensing and logistics of transporting radioactive devices
- Experience with design verification & validation
- Expertise in brachytherapy and/or implantable radiation medical devices is preferred
- Experience in dosimetry and treatment dose planning for radiation oncology is preferred
- Experience working within a company’s Quality System is preferred
- Experience in the development of regulated or combination products is preferred
