Job Description & How to Apply Below

As a Commercial Energy Systems Designer, you will translate customer energy goals into precisely designed commercial solar and battery systems; bridging the gap between what clients need and what our field teams can build. You will own the technical design of commercial-scale solar PV and battery energy storage systems (BESS) from concept through handoff to engineering.

Responsibilities
  • Understand customer energy consumption patterns, rate structures, operational needs, and financial targets. Design systems that solve real problems and deliver measurable ROI.
  • Serve as the bridge between sales and engineering. Communicate customer requirements clearly to internal engineering teams, and explain complex technical concepts—system architecture, energy economics, utility interconnection—to facility managers, engineers, and procurement teams on the customer side.
  • Navigate AHJ Requirements Master the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements for California and Illinois—two of the most complex regulatory environments in the country.
  • Design battery systems that meet local codes, utility interconnection standards, and incentive program requirements. Stay ahead of evolving regulations and ensure every system passes inspection the first time.
  • Design Across the Full Spectrum: rooftop arrays, ground-mounted systems, carport solar, single 30 kWh batteries, multi-megawatt Tesla Megapack deployments, and everything in between. Scale your designs to match the customer's needs and site constraints.
  • Produce clean, comprehensive design documentation—single-line diagrams, site layouts, equipment specifications, interconnection applications, and performance models.
  • Hand off a complete, installation mindful design package to the engineering and field operations team.
Requirements
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience designing commercial battery energy storage systems (BESS) in real-world projects
  • Deep technical understanding of how battery systems interact with commercial properties, solar PV arrays, utility grids, and energy management systems
  • Expertise in designing battery systems in California—including compliance with Title 24, utility interconnection requirements (PG&E, SCE, SDG&E), and state incentive programs like SGIP
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for creating single-line diagrams, site plans, and technical drawings that meet professional engineering standards
  • Proficiency with Helioscope and Energy Toolbase for system modeling, production forecasting, and financial analysis
  • A continuous learning mindset—you stay current on evolving battery technologies, rate structures, incentive programs, and code changes, and you constantly refine your approach to design better systems
  • Ability to understand and design for customer economic outcomes—you know how to model demand charges, time-of-use rates, export credits, and backup power economics to deliver measurable ROI
  • Comfort operating in a fast-paced, rapidly scaling environment where priorities shift quickly and adaptability is essential
