The company is seeking an entry-level contract employee for an Engineering Technician I to support drafting and engineering functions within the Telecom/Infrastructure organization. This role performs structured tasks under the guidance of supervisors and experienced team members. The position may focus on drafting, engineering support, or a combination of both. This is a hybrid role. Candidates must have a reliable home workspace and internet.
All computer equipment will be provided.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, construction drawings, and technical documentation.
- Use computer-aided design (CAD) software to prepare detailed engineering drawings, maps, and graphs based on sketches, layouts, and standard references.
- Clearly document and indicate drawing revisions.
- File drawings and update documentation according to established procedures.
- Assist with drafting solicitation documents using established formats and templates.
- Enter data into mapping systems and operational support tools.
- Conduct field or office research using historical engineering drawings, equipment databases, microfilm, inventory, and electronic document management systems (EDMS).
- Support preparation of equipment ratings, facility statistics, and layout designs.
- Prepare basic specifications, materials lists, and fixed capital unit (FCU) lists.
- Assist in setting up work orders and requisition entries.
- Perform data entry in departmental engineering databases.
- Prepare basic reports related to projects, equipment, assets, budgets, and work plans.
- Operate office and technical equipment including plotters, printers, copiers, and scanners.
- Gather engineering information by traveling independently to various facilities as needed (substations, plants, field sites, etc.).
- 1+ year of experience interpreting technical drawings and performing drafting or technical analysis using computer-aided design software.
- A degree in computer‑aided design or a related field may substitute for certain experience requirements.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD with strong emphasis on 2D drafting (minimum 1 year required).
- Experience with 3D solid modeling (preferred but not required).
- Familiarity with any of the following is a plus:
- ArcGIS Mapping
- Autodesk Revit
- Bluebeam Revu
- File management systems
- Printing/plotting technology
- Architectural technician certificate
- Associate Degree in AutoCAD/Autodesk or similar
- Basic understanding of engineering principles and CAD standards.
- Ability to read and interpret diagrams, prints, and technical information.
- Familiarity with EDMS and work management systems.
- Skill in problem-solving, technical communication, and data entry.
- Proficiency with standard office applications (email, word processing, spreadsheets).
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail.
- Work occurs in office, plant, industrial, or electrical substation environments.
- Exposure to noise, industrial conditions, and varying weather during occasional fieldwork.
- Frequent use of hands for keyboard and mouse operation.
- Less than 20% fieldwork requiring standing, walking, climbing, crouching, or similar physical activities.
