Overview
Design Tech Specialist (Transportation Specialist) II, III, or IV:
North Travis Area Office (Austin District) – 2600150. The North Travis Area Office is looking for a Design Tech Specialist to play a key role in shaping safe and efficient access to the state highway system in Austin. In this position, you’ll review and coordinate development and access permit applications, assemble complete permit packages, and evaluate traffic control plans, traffic impact analyses, construction phasing, and proposed improvements.
Your work ensures compliance with TxDOT standards while delivering clear, actionable feedback that keeps projects moving smoothly. This is an opportunity to collaborate across teams and make a tangible impact on transportation infrastructure.
The position requires the ability to manage multiple permit applications, maintain up-to-date tracking, and ensure all submittals meet TxDOT access management requirements and include the necessary forms and documentation. The role works closely with engineers, applicants, consultants, and TxDOT divisions to resolve comments, clarify requirements, and ensure consistent application of policies. It also provides technical guidance on TxDOT permitting processes and access management standards to internal and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities- Assist in prioritizing and scheduling projects.
- Coordinate communication between district/division/Department of Public Safety and other external entities.
- Coordinate compilation of complete plan packages for submission to the responsible engineer for review and signature.
- Coordinate with staff and area engineers regarding construction operations as they relate to contract administration, programming, planning, design, right-of-way and maintenance operations.
- Review and oversee plan packages submitted by consultants.
- Serve as technical member on transportation-related projects.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires you to drive for TxDOT.
- Additional responsibilities for a Design Tech Specialist III and IV include: overseeing design work among TxDOT entities, consultants and contractors.
- Overseeing project design involving design calculations and sketches of plans, layouts and typical sections.
- Planning, developing, administering and monitoring district maintenance contracts and service agreements.
- For Design Tech Specialist IV: evaluates and analyzes highly complex design issues; 4 years of transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, or bridge inspection experience (full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).
- For Transportation Specialist III & IV: 5 years of transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, or bridge inspection experience (full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).
- Licenses and
Certifications:
Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. - Competencies include: design and plan preparation, applicable plans/specifications and estimates, Texas MUTCD, program/project planning and management, stakeholder relations, applying engineering principles, documentation, reading plans/maps, and knowledge of the Utility Accommodation Rules.
- Physical requirements and working conditions: subject to environmental conditions; sedentary work; lift up to 10 lbs; pre-employment physical; may require drug testing for safety-critical positions and random testing for safety impact roles.

Transportation Specialist II: $51,158 – $81,351/yearly - Salary Range:
Transportation Specialist III: $54,278 – $87,046/yearly - Salary Range:
Transportation Specialist IV: $57,614 – $93,168/yearly - Pay Basis:
Yearly; FLSA Status:
