Lead Electrical Engineer – Physical Substation
Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a Substation Physical Lead Engineer to join our team. The Substation Physical Engineer serves as a client‑facing point of contact on electric substation design projects for high‑voltage utility systems and renewable energy interconnection projects. He/She will apply NESC, NEC, and other applicable codes and standards in the engineering design and will independently produce high‑voltage physical arrangements, plans and elevation views, station grounding analysis, layout and details, cable trough and conduit plans, AC and DC calculations to determine station service and battery system requirements, preparation of equipment specifications and bill of materials, and preparation of construction documents.
He/She will also work with other internal and external project stakeholders to ensure project milestones and expectations of contracted services are met.
Take technical ownership of all aspects of design for high voltage (4 kV ‑ 230 kV) and EHV (above 230 kV) substation projects.
Responsibilities- Development of general arrangements, plan views and elevation views, grounding plans, cable trough/conduit plans, specifications for major primary equipment (transformers, breakers, switches, etc.), documentation for design calculations, bill of materials.
- Construction documentation (sequence and RFP) for studies, grounding, lighting, AC and DC calculations for station service and battery system sizing.
- Bus fault stress analysis.
- Technical support for procurement and construction.
- Coordinate with Physical Designer to develop the above drawings.
- Coordinate with external and internal project team members, including transmission line engineers, distribution line engineers, civil engineers, geotechnical engineers, and surveyors.
- Produce high‑quality work and support continuous improvement efforts.
- Work in a fast‑paced environment on multiple projects.
- Assist with identification of key client interests and drivers and determine key clients when applicable.
- Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns.
- Serve as a technical specialist for system protection and communication and provide consultation and guidance to project teams.
- Remove impediments obstructing the engineering team from achieving its goals.
- Advise management on how to maximize ROI for the team.
- Attend all client technical review meetings.
