Position Overview
TxDOT’s Construction Division is seeking a Transportation Engineer to serve in our claims section. The future engineer will mainly be responsible for drafting claim reports for the Contract Claims Committee and applying knowledge gained through CST training. This role supports TxDOT’s 25 districts on all matters related to contract administration and the statewide construction program.
Transportation Engineer III Responsibilities- Assist in developing, publishing, and delivering technical training and guidance to project personnel on scheduling and resourcing.
- Review change orders, supplemental agreements, memorandums, and extra work orders; review monthly and final estimates before submission.
- Review literature, technical data, material specifications, and procedures.
- Review shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements, and change order requests.
- Write reports, specifications, and test procedures.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Use the department’s enterprise Critical Path Method (CPM) schedule and resource management tool for scheduling and resource management of transportation projects.
- Monitor, evaluate, analyze, and make recommendations on formal contractor claims and consultant approval for highway contracts.
- Represent the district/division at various meetings.
- Develop claims prevention techniques.
- Develop training courses and/or materials.
- Drive/travel to project/work locations to conduct on‑site engineering reviews, analyses, and tests; provide technical support.
- Lead and train professional and administrative staff.
- Utilize project management principles in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling, and closing transportation projects.
- Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science; graduate level education may be substituted on a year‑per‑year basis. - Experience:
Transportation Engineer III – 6 years;
Transportation Engineer IV – 7 years;
Transportation Engineer V – 8 years of related engineering experience. - Licenses and
Certifications:
Valid driver’s license; licensed professional engineer (state of Texas). If not currently licensed in Texas, must obtain a Texas professional engineering license within 6 months of hire.
- Apply engineering principles, practices, and methods to job responsibilities.
- Develop, prepare, review, and process plans, specifications, and estimates.
- Prepare technical and statistical reports.
- Conduct research, analyze, and interpret policies and laws specific to functional area.
- Wear protective gear (respirator, hard hat, etc.).
- Sedentary work:
Lift up to 10 lbs;
Light work:
Lift up to 20 lbs;
Standing: prolonged periods;
Repetitive motion. Visual acuity needed for computer screen and data review.
- Must pass a pre‑employment physical and drug test for safety impact positions.
