Principal Substation Engineer

Jacobs is expanding its Transmission & Distribution (T&D) operations in North America and is seeking a Principal Substation Engineer to support the energy transition portfolio. The role involves designing substations for utility upgrades, greenfield and brownfield projects, offshore wind facilities, and developer interconnection sites. The engineer will interface closely with utility and developer clients, provide technical oversight, and act as an independent advisor representing owner interests.

• Work with regional and global T&D delivery teams to develop substation design deliverables for utility upgrades.
• Develop designs from conceptual through IFC drawings, including general arrangement, conduit, trench, grounding, bill of materials, and construction details.
• Provide engineering overview, expertise, and direction for major T&D programs and network overhauls.
• Act as an independent technical advisor and, when required, as an owner’s consultant/engineer.
• Mentor team members across North America and globally.
• Support the sales and proposal preparation process for new contracts.
• Engage with professional societies (IEEE, PES, etc.) and participate in industry conferences and events.
• Perform field visits and walk‑downs to support construction and client engagements.

• Master’s degree in electrical engineering, electrical power engineering, or a related discipline.
• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States.
• Minimum 12 years of direct substation design experience with utilities or consulting organizations.
• Advanced knowledge of high‑voltage substation components including transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, capacitor banks, GIS, and control house designs.
• Experience in developing substation designs from conceptual to IFC stages.
• Familiarity with grounding system design, lightning protection, substation AC/DC station service calculations, and voltage‑drop studies.
• Experience reviewing vendor specifications and construction/commissioning specifications.
• Proficiency in CADD platforms such as Autodesk or Bentley.
• Prior experience as an owner’s representative preferred.
• Strong QA/QC skills for design calculations, drawings, and specifications.
• Ability to scope projects, prepare task orders, review work by others, and verify owner compliance.
• Excellent communication, technical writing, teamwork, and presentation skills.
• Willingness to train, mentor junior staff, and develop training modules.
