Job Description:

Transportation Engineer I, II, III, or IV – Bridge Division (2600015)

Position Information

TXDOT’s Bridge Division is seeking a Bridge Inspection Engineer at levels I–IV based in Austin, TX. The role is part of the Special Bridge Inspection Unit team that monitors the condition of Texas’ bridges statewide, including investigations of non‑redundant steel tension member (NSTM) projects, tunnel field inspections, and management of consultant inspection contracts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect bridges according to National Bridge Inspection Standards and TxDOT‑specific requirements.
  • Document structural distress, safety hazards, and construction defects.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports, specifications, and test procedures.
  • Review and evaluate designs and drawings submitted by other engineers.
  • Assist Project Managers with resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and procurement.
  • Monitor consultants’ progress and work quality; check invoices and prepare supplemental agreements.
  • Recommend bridge replacement, rehabilitation, and repair of damaged structures.
  • Coordinate integrated project plans and schedules to ensure efficient execution.
  • Represent TxDOT in presentations and stakeholder meetings.
  • Perform other assigned duties as required.
  • At levels II–IV, additional duties include:
    • Assist districts with bridge inspection matters (II).
    • Serve as help‑desk resource for technical and policy issues (II).
    • Negotiate fees, scope, and monitor consultant contracts (II).
    • Lead work and negotiate contracts for routine, fracture‑critical, and underwater inspections (III).
    • Chair contract‑selection teams, set short‑term and long‑term goals, monitor contractor performance, and manage project teams (IV).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related science; higher degrees accepted by TX PELS.
  • Experience:

    4–7 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related experience; graduate level education may substitute one year of experience per year.
  • Licenses and

    Certifications:

    Licensed Professional Engineer (optional at time of application);
    Safety Impact Certificate (issued upon hire).
  • Knowledge and

    Skills:
    • Structural engineering principles and bridge construction and evaluation methods.
    • Standards and specifications for bridges.
    • Bridge inspection appraisal methods.
    • Report writing and proofreading.
    • Researching, analyzing, and interpreting applicable laws and regulations.
    • Planning, coordinating, and managing multiple projects.
    • Communication and presentation skills.
    • Advanced: fatigue and fracture mechanics, team facilitation, strategic planning (higher levels).
Salary

Annual range: $65,104 – $124,600 (based on grade and level).

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
