What To ExpectTesla’s Manufacturing Engineering team is at the forefront of developing first‑of‑a‑kind processes that enable us to produce vehicles at top quality and rate in a safe, ergonomic environment. The Materials Engineering team is looking for a Manufacturing Controls Development Engineer to develop, implement, commission, troubleshoot and program robotic applications, conveyor systems, process equipment such as DCM, ovens, application booths, pretreatment systems, and monitoring systems within the manufacturing shop.
You will lead design and development of technically complex controls, electrical and automation systems for new manufacturing lines, working closely with internal cross‑functional teams, external vendors and technology partners through concept to production.
- Participate in initial equipment conceptual development, balancing product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, cost, and lead‑time limits
- Implement and manage continuous process optimization, adding advanced and conventional technologies to improve quality, productivity and reduce waste
- Lay out new industrial electrical control panels that are NFPA
79/NEC/UL508A compliant, and create electrical, pneumatic and fluid schematics - Architect, develop and debug PLC code with an emphasis on well‑structured, documented, maintainable code that interacts with conveyors, robots, MES, Lab View, machine vision and 3rd‑party equipment
- Implement ANSI/RIA
15.06/OSHA‑compliant safety systems to safeguard robots, gantries, conveyors and other high‑volume equipment - Generate, optimize and improve user‑friendly HMI screens, SCADA systems and MES interfaces for complex machinery
- Develop and implement quality control methods including poke‑yokes, data tracking systems, part recognition and problem reporting
- Manage electrical cabinet builds, field wiring, pneumatic and fluid plumbing
- Introduce automated processes into production and train sustaining teams
- Ensure all equipment, processes and methodologies comply with applicable standards, company policy and health and safety laws
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Automation Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of professionals controls engineering experience, including advanced PLC and motor controller programming (Rockwell, Siemens and equivalent PLCs with safety controllers)
- Demonstrated proficiency in developing electrical and controls architectures for new equipment and lines
- Proficient in PLC, HMI (Ignition, Siemens), and debugging mechatronic systems
- Understanding of databases (MSSQL, MySQL), OOP languages (Java, Python, etc.) and CAD (AutoCAD, CATIA, Solid Works, EPLAN)
- Advanced robotics programming skills (Fanuc, Kuka, Durr, ABB, etc.)
- In‑depth knowledge of electrical standards (NFPA
79, NEC, UL508A) and safety standards (ANSI/RIA, OSHA) - Proficiency selecting circuit protectors, wiring, sensors, safety hardware, PLC hardware, remote I/O, VFDs, robots and servo systems
- Experience with vision systems (Cognex, Keyence, Fanuc)
- Preferred experience working with automotive manufacturing processes and equipment
