Job Description & How to Apply Below

The Athens campus of Ohio University and its five regional campuses are geographically located within the 32 Ohio counties identified by the 1965 Appalachian Regional Development Act as Appalachia. Rich in regional culture and the arts, Appalachia continues to embrace entrepreneurship and innovation towards an envisioned future of promise and opportunity. Because of our location, the University is uniquely situated to support Appalachia through teaching, research, and service and holds this fact central to its mission.

The School of Art + Design includes a number of highly ranked national programs and is part of the Chaddock + Morrow College of Fine Arts.

The School of Art + Design at Ohio University invites applicants for a one-year renewable appointment in Art History at the level of Visiting Professor, beginning date, Aug 16, 2026. The Art History area supports graduate MA &MFAstudents and undergraduate, BA &BFAstudents in the study of Art History spanning cave art to the contemporary moment covering cultures and locations around the globe.

This is an instructional position with teaching and service roles and is a vital part of rejuvenating the School of Art + Design’s Art History curriculum recently redesigned to: better reflect and activate current development and opportunities in the Art History field, connect to economic opportunity for students, and address the needs of art practitioners (MFA&BFAstudents) as they position their work within important discourses while synthesizing contextual and historic frameworks of art, architecture, and design practices.

The Art History program is situated alongside thriving Studio Art and Design programs. The qualified candidate will join an Art History faculty already teaching with expertise in contemporary art & theory, global art & archeology, the ancient & early modern world, and arts of the African continent. Our Art History curriculum also engages course work in both the Classics and Religious Studies, and the Department of African American Studies.

We seek a dynamic, engaged Art Historian with expertise and interest in teaching a global art history at the undergraduate and MA/MFAlevels.

The successful candidate will teach a course load commensurate with job responsibilities across the academic year, and will serve effectively as a mentor for students. Further a candidate must be able to work with program faculty in finalizing the development and delivering a portion of the menu of new regional surveys in Art History— East Asia, South East Asia and the Pacific, South Asia and West Asia, the Eurasian continent including Europe and Russia, the Americas, Arts of the African Continent, and a survey of Modern and Contemporary Art.

We will prioritize candidates that demonstrate the ability to connect the historical contributions of art from a broad spectrum of cultural perspectives and geographic regions to contemporary art practice and discourse with global art movements and theory.

The successful candidate will possess demonstrated capabilities in teaching introductory surveys of global art history as well as teaching and supervision of graduate students in area(s) of specialization. Expectations include participation on both Art History MA and Studio ArtMFAgraduate thesis committees inclusive of studio visits. The successful candidate will contribute to auxiliary programs and community engagement and cross-college initiatives. Participation on School, College and/or University Committees will also be required.
