Position: Lecturer (advanced legal writing and bar prep)

Description

The University of Texas School of Law seeks to hire a lecturer to fill a new faculty position focused on academic success and bar exam passage. The lecturer will design and teach courses to help students develop the writing and analytical skills necessary for success during law school and on the bar exam. The position will collaborate closely with the Student Affairs Office.

The successful applicant will be expected to teach multiple sections of an upper-level course on legal analysis and writing for students on academic probation or concern after their first year. This existing course typically has had a small enrollment with students engaged in hands‑on work with close faculty interaction. The lecturer will also design and teach a new bar preparation course for third‑year students, with additional credit‑bearing workshops for at‑risk students.

The successful applicant will work closely with the academic advising team in the Student Affairs Office (SAO), and additional support for the position will be provided by the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and the faculty of the David J. Beck Center for Legal Research, Writing, and Appellate Advocacy (who teach first‑year students). Job duties will include teaching classes, providing individual feedback and coaching to students, overseeing teaching assistants, working with the SAO to provide bar exam information to students, and engaging in other forms of service to the Law School and University.

The position is expected to stay abreast of information about best practices and scholarship regarding academic support and bar preparation, particularly regarding the Next Gen Bar.

This is a nine-month faculty position, with the possibility of an additional summer appointment to engage in bar exam training and coaching. The position is non-tenure track, with an initial one-year appointment followed by three-year rolling, presumptively renewable appointments. While renewal of the position is not guaranteed, long‑term job security is the practice and the expectation. The position cannot lead to a tenure‑track appointment.

While some job duties can be performed off site, the successful applicant will need to be available on campus during normal business hours to fulfill many job responsibilities, particularly during the academic year.

This nine‑month, full‑time position is at the University status of Lecturer, with a salary of $130,000+ (depending on experience), plus insurance and retirement benefits through the University's generous benefits package. Additional compensation will be provided for any summer appointments.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • JD Degree from an ABA‑accredited law school
  • Three or more years of relevant or transferable experience
  • Bar membership in a US jurisdiction (may be inactive)
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication with both individuals and large groups
  • Interpersonal skills relevant to individualized academic counseling and coaching
  • Knowledge of learning and teaching strategies for law students and other adult learners

Preferred qualifications:

  • Three years of teaching experience in a U.S. law school, including at least one year teaching legal writing, bar review classes, or providing academic support
  • Experience in designing and implementing bar exam review classes and materials
  • Experience working with at‑risk law students
