Primary

Purpose:

Assist certified staff members in creating a positive learning environment to facilitate the personal, social, and intellectual development of students. Assist in implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Instructional Support

* Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.

* Assist with administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.

* Help maintain neat and orderly classroom.

* Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.

* Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.

* Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.

Student Management

* Work closely with students and reinforce skills introduced by the teacher.

* Tutor individual students (e.g., help them prepare assignments or explain material they do not understand); assist with independent study.

* Help manage behavior of students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior, as needed.

* Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.

* Work with individual students or small groups on instructional activities assigned by teacher.

* Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This could include lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.

* Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.

Other

* Perform clerical duties (recording attendance/grades and duplicating/laminating material).

* Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.

* Participate in faculty meeting and special events as assigned.

* Other duties as assigned.
