Lakeland University, an independent liberal arts institution located in east central Wisconsin, invites applications from a diverse group of qualified candidates to serve as the Dean of Students. Lakeland seeks a candidate committed to serving a diverse student community with varied experience and ability levels. The review of applications will begin immediately, with a goal of on-campus interviews taking place after the start of the academic year.
The Dean of Students has overall responsibility for providing leadership for student services programs, personnel, and departments with a strong focus on building and maintaining a positive and welcoming culture across the university for all students including commuters and veterans through the development and implementation of innovative, engaging programming. The role fosters institutional connectedness leading to student success in the transition into college, collegiate life, academics, and the transition from university to the world of work or graduate school.
The role is a key administrator central to student retention.
The Dean of Students leads the departments of Campus Life including student activities, Residence Life, student leadership, student organizations including Greek Life. The Dean oversees the process of university students' rights and responsibilities (student conduct). The Dean plays an active role in intramurals activities, student well-being (Lakeland Intervention Team) and transition-to-college programming (Blue & Gold Days, New Student Orientation, and the First-Year Experience).
As a leader, the Dean works collaboratively across university administrative and academic departments to design, develop, promote, implement, and evaluate programs and services that support and improve student co-curricular experience, personal development, academic performance, and overall student satisfaction with the collegiate experience.
Essential Functions- Must be able to work creatively, in synergy with all Lakeland University departments;
- Serve as a resource and mentor for students at Lakeland University;
- Maintain a standard to ensure all students receive the experience they desire;
- Supervise designated Campus Life departments including Residence Life, Student Activities, Student Leadership, etc;
- Serve as oversight administrator for student conduct process;
- Lead the development and implementation of commuter and veteran student support and programming;
- Serve on the Lakeland Intervention Team (LIT);
- Develop, maintain and distribute all-activities calendar;
- Provides oversight of programming centering on the student experience with the goal of increasing retention/persistence;
- Maintain an annual campus life experience/climate survey for data review;
- Develops and collects data from all campus life departments for reporting out dashboards to University Leadership;
- Will identify and implement an assessment instrument to collect data on all Campus Life co-curricular programing with a concentration on student learning outcomes (SLO) and program learning outcomes (PLO);
- Performs other duties assigned.
Masters Degree in related field (eg. student affairs, higher education, counseling/advising) and five years of professional related experience with management experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Proven track record of planning and implementing new programs and services, with sound project management skills;
- Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills;
- Ability to supervise and motivate a team to achieve well defined goals;
- Ability to communicate effectively with populations from different backgrounds verbally and in writing;
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships;
- Ability to work independently and in group settings;
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) or similar products;
- Experience with students from different backgrounds;
- Demonstrated commitment to creating and facilitating climate in which all students feel welcome;
- Strong organization and communication skills, along with an ability to maintain a professional office environment is required.
