Job Description & How to Apply Below

Math Teacher and Professional Development Consultant

Join us as a math teacher in an innovative school in Austin that takes teaching very seriously, on a team that loves working together. This is the dream job for anyone who is passionate about teaching, strives to teach mathematics as a coherent discipline, and wants to work with fellow educators who are optimistic, collaborative, and dedicated. This position is full‑time, with a one‑week summer commitment for PD.

During the school year, you will be leading one group or “band” of learners: 3 classes a week, for a total of 5 hours of instruction time. You will either be leading an elementary group (2nd‑3rd or 4th‑5th) or a middle school group (5th‑6th or 7th‑8th), depending on your background. All age groups operate at a higher level than in many schools;

the Long‑View/Number Lab approach supports depth, reasoning, and connections across mathematical ideas. It is not based on a prescribed textbook or curriculum. Long‑View’s schedule supports high level learning and allows teachers to do their best work: you will only teach one class and will be focused on one group of 20 children. This means more professional interaction with colleagues, more time to research, plan, and evaluate student work, and more time to invest in the big picture of the school.

Plus, our school is 4 days a week. On Fridays our teaching team has a standing morning meeting and then meets in departments or utilizes the afternoon for planning/prep time. Because we have a well‑developed pedagogy and content trajectory for the teaching of mathematics, preference will be given to applicants who have attended The Number Lab [Co]lab, subscribe to Learning for The Long‑View platform, or in some other way demonstrated interest in our approach.

Core

Responsibilities
  • Lead instruction of one band of learners (dependent on content knowledge and understanding of our philosophy; we will co‑design a transition plan based on your skill set).
  • Collaborate with math team on curricular design and content creation goals.
  • Collect data to track growth of learners; analyze and report as per Long‑View’s assessment process.
  • Participate in daily activities associated with running the school.
  • Lead small instructional groups, before or after school.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High degree of knowledge in mathematics content and confidently able to teach in the 2nd‑5th grade or 5th‑8th grade range.
  • Three or more years of teaching experience.
  • Loves teaching and supporting student growth.
  • Strong communication skills and adept collaborator with colleagues (we are a team—you will not be in your room, working in isolation).
