Museum of the Coastal Bend, Victoria, TX

Full time, Temporary Position

Victoria College’s Cultural Affairs Department is recruiting for one temporary full time Collections Intern to work in the Museum of the Coastal Bend. This internship is a paid internship which will take place during Summer 2026 for 58 days (8 hours, 5 days a week). Working under the supervision of the Exhibits and Collections Manager, this position is responsible for cataloging, inventorying, and accessioning the collections.

This is a great opportunity for anyone planning a career in collections management as the successful candidate will learn and be exposed to real world knowledge in collections management, participation in Collections Committee meetings, and participation in Advisory Board meetings.

The Museum of the Coastal Bend showcases the rich multi-cultural heritage of the mid-coastal region of Texas. In 2009, the Museum of the Coastal Bend achieved Certified Curatorial Facility status, a designation awarded by the Texas Historical Commission to only seventeen institutions in the state. The certification ensures that facilities meet current museum standards pertinent to the care and management of held-in-trust collections.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Cataloging, inventorying, and accessioning artifacts
  • Photograph artifacts
  • Catalogue/inventory collections
  • Accession artifacts/collections
  • Match artifacts with accession records
  • Notify and assist Exhibits and Collections Manager to fix any discrepancies
  • Create condition reports on artifacts when needed
Qualifications
  • Current graduate student working towards a Masters in Museum Studies, Public History, History, Archaeology, or related field
  • Knowledge of museum best practices for artifact handling
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-directed and able to work without supervision
  • Energetic and eager to tackle projects
  • Excellent critical thinking/problem solving skills
  • Experience with Past Perfect CMS preferred but not required
Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle controls, key pads, etc. Will be required to sit and reach with hands and arms as well as, sit, stand and walk. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, some color vision, and the ability to adjust focus from documents to computer screen.

Hearing of light to moderate sound is required by this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
