Job Description

Western Eco Systems Technology, Inc. (WEST) is a dynamic environmental and statistical consulting firm with offices across the United States and Canada. We are looking for temporary part-time Detection Dog Handlers to train and work with their own suitable dog(s) to monitor the impact of wind turbines on wildlife. Experienced field technicians with dogs suited for scent detection training – including nosework, tracking, hunting, or field trials – are encouraged to apply.

  • Dog Compensation: $35/day of dog field work

    Housing or rent reimbursement provided for qualifying applicants

    Vehicle mileage reimbursed at the federal rate or via rental plus gas reimbursement; field safety equipment provided; handlers must supply appropriate footwear and field-appropriate clothing; dogs must be vaccinated against rabies (proof required)
Job Summary

Join WEST’s detection dog team to help with important wildlife research and conservation. Responsibilities include following WEST’s Scent Training Program, surveying areas beneath wind turbines for bat and bird carcasses, providing consistent care for your dog, collecting data, and completing routine administrative tasks.

Job Requirements
  • Ownership of a suitable candidate dog and successful completion of WEST’s Scent Training Program for Wildlife Detection Dogs
  • Ability to upload training videos and documentation, complete stage assessments, and maintain regular communication with a Dog Coordinator
  • Successful completion of odor recognition testing and in-person, double-blind scent detection evaluation trials
  • Knowledge of dog behavior and rewards-based training; familiarity with both learning theory and scent theory is preferred
  • Ability to work independently and coordinate effectively with crew members, project coordinators, and landowners
  • Must pass pre-employment background checks, drug screening, DMV records check, and possess a valid driver’s license
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to walk 5-7+ miles a day over uneven terrain in various weather conditions
  • Capacity to maintain a positive attitude during long outdoor workdays (8-12+ hours)
Minimum Dog Suitability Requirements
  • Dog must be in excellent physical health and capable of walking/running up to 10 miles a day
  • Up-to-date on all required vaccines, including rabies (with proof)
  • Non-brachycephalic, with no bite history, and must demonstrate high trainability
