Work Shift:

Evening – 3PM-11:30PM, Monday-Friday (United States of America)

Job Summary

The Lead Sterile Processing Technician works under the direction of the Sterile Processing Supervisor or Manager to assist with the coordination and implementation of surgical instrument processing and workflow. Responsibilities include processing supplies and equipment, performing cleaning and sterilization duties, preparing surgical packs, supplies, linens and instruments in the central supply area, and ensuring operating rooms are adequately stocked to run surgeries efficiently and on time.

The lead technician also serves as a liaison, resource, participant in performance improvement initiatives, troubleshoots daily operational issues, provides orientation to staff, and oversees designated service lines.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Demonstrate consistent application of aseptic/sterile techniques for all instruments and supplies
  • Collect, receive, disinfect, and decontaminate instruments, supplies and equipment according to hospital policies and relevant guidelines (AORN, AAMI, JCAHO)
  • Apply proper sterilization procedures using sonic washers, washer decontaminators, steam and sterilization equipment, ensuring equipment is in proper working condition and reporting maintenance needs
  • Handle, scan barcodes, and store sterile items in predetermined locations for future use
  • Inspect surgical instruments and medical equipment, detect need for repair or replacement, assemble and wrap or containerize instruments and equipment
  • Maintain instruments, equipment and supplies in good working condition and availability on a 24‑hour basis
  • Maintain all required regulatory documentation of sterilization records and surgical supplies (e.g., quality control logs)
  • Document policies and procedures related to safety, quality improvement, infection control, and other standards accurately and legibly
  • Respond to requests from nursing staff and others by locating surgical instrumentation and supplies
  • Check and stock supplies, rotating stock by expiration dates
  • Act as a liaison with individuals responsible for ordering supplies
  • Deliver and unload supplies to appropriate areas and restock supplies as needed
  • Coordinate instrument turnaround activities in conjunction with the Manager and retrieve equipment needed for scheduled and emergent cases
  • Assist in emergency situations by assembling and returning needed equipment
  • Communicate relevant information related to instrumentation or supplies to management, physicians, staff, or sales representatives
  • Report unusual occurrences (problems, accidents, safety, quality, or patient experience concerns) to leadership
  • Promote positive behaviors that enhance patient experience when interacting with patients, visitors, physicians, and other team members
  • Ensure patient privacy, comfort, and safety during the delivery or set up of supplies or equipment
  • Attend departmental staff meetings as required and communicate frequently with SPTs to assure proper workflow and availability of supplies
  • Assist the supervisor or manager with staff meetings and attend surgical services staff meetings
  • Act as a general liaison within SPTs and other team members of surgical services
  • Maintain data on productivity and process effectiveness
Required

Minimum Education
  • High School Diploma or GED;
    Associates (Preferred)
Required Minimum Licenses and Certifications
  • CRCST – Certified Registered Central Service Technician or CSPDT – Certified Sterile Processing & Distribution Technician (required upon hire)
Required Minimum Experience

Minimum 2 years of previous sterile processing experience.

  • Expert knowledge in surgical supply processing, instruments, and sterile technique
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Highly organized with ability to set priorities and adapt to daily demands
  • Ability to work with all levels of care providers
  • Self‑directed and self‑motivated with strong customer service skills
  • Proficiency in English (written and verbal)
