Job Summary

The Cardiac Vascular Sonographer functions in a dual‑role position as both Cardiac and Vascular Sonographer. They perform all cardiac imaging, including adult, pediatric, trans‑esophageal and stress echocardiograms, and all vascular imaging including carotid duplex, Ankle‑Brachial Index (ABI), AAA screening, aorta, and upper and lower extremity arterial and venous scans. Experience with venous reflux studies is preferred but not required. The sonographer performs measurements and calculations according to laboratory protocol, provides written or oral summary to the interpreting physician, and ensures safety and well‑being of all patients.

They must communicate effectively with patients and the healthcare team, be flexible with work hours, dependable, accountable and cooperative, and be available to take call and work weekends and holidays on a rotating basis.

Core Responsibilities & Essential Functions
  • Verify proper clinician order for procedure.
  • Obtain complete clinical history, gather examination data and assess for contraindicating conditions.
  • Explain test procedures to patients; address concerns and answer questions appropriately.
  • Follow established procedures for the administration of contrast media to avoid patient deterioration or undue pain.
  • Ensure proper patient identification and correct use of right and left markers.
  • Review ultrasound images for clinically acceptable results and release patients.
  • Respond to emergency situations, restocking crash cart, and maintaining life‑support equipment.
  • Assist other technologists in all modalities when needed.
  • Observe patient condition and evaluate when physician intervention is necessary.
  • Verify correct patient identity using two unique identifiers per hospital policy.
  • Ensure patient privacy and comfort, maintaining dignity throughout the exam.
  • Demonstrate competence in appropriate procedures, equipment, supplies, and techniques based on patient age.
  • Organize schedule, time, and priorities to accomplish required activities within designated time frames.
  • Follow physicians’ instructions when assisting with procedures and exams.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with loading and operating power injection.
  • Use critical‑thinking skills.
  • Dialog with patient/family, ask clarifying questions, seek clarification on ambiguous orders.
  • Understand, demonstrate and document pre‑procedural verification and “Time‑Out” process.
  • Understand pre‑and post‑procedural care, prepare the patient for the procedure, and maintain sterile technique.
  • Perform all vascular ultrasound and echocardiography exams.
Education & Communication
  • Clearly explain purpose and nature of exam to patient prior to procedure, minimizing anxiety and facilitating cooperation using AIDET.
  • Address patient questions, concerns, or contraindications; notify physician when unresolved.
  • Participate in orientation and training of departmental employees.
  • Provide patients with preparatory instruction and explanation of procedures.
  • Document concise, legible records with precise terminology.
  • Read scheduled daily emails and follow through with assignments.
  • Complete mandatory departmental and hospital‑wide education without prompting.
  • Maintain appropriate patient‑care documentation, including echocardiograph tapes, charts, logs, and procedure identification for accurate charging.
