Job Summary

The House Supervisor is the on site administrative nursing leader for the hospital during evening and night hours. This role is responsible for hospital-wide clinical oversight, staffing, patient throughput, and coordination of services in collaboration with nursing and ancillary departments, acting as the administrative designee in the absence of executive leadership.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the administrative designee on behalf of hospital leadership during assigned shifts, responding to urgent administrative needs, complaints, and clinical/facility emergencies.
  • Coordinate the hospital response during emergencies or disasters until relieved by the Administrator/Director on call.
  • Provide clinical support as needed (e.g., patient transfers requiring an RN, IV starts, direct patient care assistance).
  • Assume administrative responsibility for patient care staffing house wide; make purposeful rounds on inpatient units, ED, OR/PACU, and Patient Placement to gather information and make staffing decisions.
  • Adjust staffing to maintain compliance with the Nursing Staffing Plan and minimum staffing standards; provide guidance and counsel regarding staffing changes.
  • Collaborate with nurse managers, directors, product line leaders, and the CNO to communicate staffing decisions, operational issues, and disciplinary situations.
  • Coordinate and optimize patient throughput (admissions, transfers, discharges) by working closely with physicians, charge nurses, discharge planners, Patient Placement, Environmental Services, Engineering/Facilities, and Patient Transport.
  • Identify and resolve throughput bottlenecks; address daily bed availability concerns and delays in a timely manner.
  • Act as a patient advocate and leader/mentor/advisor for nursing team members; support staff in developing clinical, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Provide feedback to nurse managers to support performance management and staff development.
  • Interpret and clarify hospital goals, policies, and procedures for staff as needed.
  • Participate in committees/task forces and serve as a positive role model and change agent.
  • Demonstrate responsibility for personal and professional growth; perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education:
    • BSN required.
    • Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification:
    • Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of Illinois.
    • Current BLS; additional advanced certifications preferred per hospital standards.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 3 years of current acute care RN experience required.
    • Prior supervisory/leadership experience (e.g., charge nurse, team lead) preferred.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Comfort with change, strong problem solving, creativity, and flexibility.
    • Broad, well‑rounded clinical expertise across multiple inpatient areas.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and support nursing staff in a fast‑paced environment.
