Pay Range

Base pay range: $50,599.00/yr$92,085.00/yr (actual pay based on skills, experience, and recruiter discussion).

Summary

The incumbent performs a variety of supportive nursing and medical tasks necessary to the care of patients during diagnostic and therapeutic visits to any VA Primary Care Clinic location. The Licensed Practical Nurse’s (LPN) practice is modeled on the standards established within the VHA model for Patient Aligned Care Teams.

Qualifications
  • Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education:

    Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or the National League for Nursing [Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)] at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
  • Licensure:
    Full, active, current, and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
  • English Language Proficiency:
    Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in both spoken and written English.
  • Grade Determinations:
    In addition to the basic requirements, the following qualification criteria must be met for each grade (GS‑03 to GS‑06):
    • GS‑03:
      None beyond basic requirements.
    • GS‑04:
      Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN or one year of experience in a supervised medical facility involving practical nursing care.
    • GS‑05:
      Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS‑04 level or equivalent, and demonstration of the ability to provide practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical or behavioral problems.
    • GS‑06:
      Completion of at least one additional year of qualifying experience at the GS‑05 level or equivalent, with proficiency in complex practical nursing practices and patient education.
Physical Requirements
  • Visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, and manual dexterity.
  • Potential to perform long periods of walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing.
  • Transferring patients and objects may be required; mechanical inpatient lifts are provided.
  • Exposure to infectious patients, contaminated materials, and protective clothing in isolation situations may occur.
  • Maturity, flexibility, and the ability to work effectively in stressful situations, including with combative patients, are essential.
Duties
  • This is an open continuous announcement and will remain open until December 31 , 2025.
  • The incumbent provides a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and behavioral problems.
  • Performs routine patient evaluations, monitors behavior and response to treatments, and provides patient and family education.
  • Works under the general supervision of an RN or MD/DO to deliver safe, evidence‑based care.
  • Assesses emergency situations and initiates appropriate interventions, reporting to RN or MD/DO.
  • Observes, documents, and reports medication administration and patient responses.
  • Maintains professional boundaries, promotes respectful patient relationships, and applies established customer service standards.
  • Assists with or performs complex diagnostic tests and treatments when qualified, and may serve as a preceptor for less experienced nursing staff.
  • Seeks and shares educational opportunities to enhance clinical knowledge and advance nursing practice.
