The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) supports the Director of Nursing in planning, organizing, developing, and directing the overall operations of the Nursing Services Department in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations governing skilled nursing facilities. This role plays a critical leadership function in a high-acuity environment
, ensuring clinical excellence, regulatory compliance, staffing effectiveness, and resident safety at all times.
Clinical Leadership & Operations
Assist in the planning, organization, and oversight of nursing services and clinical programs
Support high-acuity care delivery, including post-acute, rehabilitative, and restorative nursing services
Make daily rounds to monitor resident care, staff performance, and clinical outcomes
Serve as a clinical resource and leader for nursing staff across all shifts
Regulatory Compliance & Survey Readiness
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations governing skilled nursing facilities
Assist with survey preparation, audits, and corrective action plans
Maintain policies and procedures that align with regulatory standards and best practices
Support infection prevention and control practices (IP certification required)
Staffing & Workforce Management
Assist with determining staffing needs and scheduling to support high-acuity census
Recommend appropriate staffing levels and skill mix by shift
Supervise, coach, and discipline nursing staff in a fair and consistent manner
Ensure nursing assistants meet training and certification requirements
Care Planning & Resident Services
Participate in resident admission assessments and care planning
Ensure individualized care plans are developed, implemented, and updated
Monitor documentation for accuracy, timeliness, and regulatory compliance
Address resident, family, and staff concerns professionally and promptly
Administrative & Collaborative Duties
Assist with preparation of departmental budgets and operational planning
Participate in nursing leadership meetings and interdisciplinary care conferences
Complete reports, audits, evaluations, and clinical documentation as required
Perform additional duties as assigned in support of facility operations
Strong clinical judgment and leadership in a high-acuity SNF environment
Knowledge of nursing practices, infection control, and regulatory requirements
Ability to manage conflict, provide coaching, and lead under pressure
Professional demeanor with compassion, patience, and accountability
Graduate of an approved Registered Nurse (RN) program
Current, active, unencumbered RN license in the state of practice
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
Minimum of 1 year supervisory nursing experience in a hospital, skilled nursing, or healthcare facility
At least 6 months experience in rehabilitative or restorative nursing preferred
Infection Prevention (IP) certification required
High-acuity SNF experience strongly preferred
Physical Requirements
Fast-paced, high-acuity clinical setting with frequent interruptions
Regular interaction with residents, families, staff, physicians, and regulatory personnel
May require extended hours, weekends, on-call coverage, or emergency response
Exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous materials, and clinical risks
Ability to lift, push, pull, or move up to 25 pounds and assist with resident evacuation when necessary
