Job Overview

The Clinical Pharmacist Neonatal Intensive Care, ensures safe, appropriate, and economical use of drugs through the application of specialized skills and knowledge in pediatric patient care.

This position supports the continued growth of our Level IV NICU. The pharmacist will join three experienced NICU pharmacists to deliver specialized clinical pharmacy services for this unique patient population. Together, the four pharmacists will rotate across NICU teams on a monthly basis.

Children's Colorado's Level IV NICUs provide the highest level of care for newborns and premature infants. These specialized units are equipped to manage the most complex neonatal conditions and care for the smallest and most critically ill babies, regardless of gestational age.

Our Level IV NICU at the Anschutz Medical Campus is among the nation's top-performing and highest-volume units. Here, we deliver expert care for every baby-no matter how rare or severe their condition.

Hours per week: 40, eligible for benefits
Shift: Day, with weekend rotation and selected holidays.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provides drug information services by responding to questions regarding medication compatibilities, adverse drug events, regimens, dosing, interactions, storage and disposal, compounding, therapeutic uses of medications and pharmaceutical supplies in a timely manner; using a systematic approach to effectively searching, retrieving, and evaluating the literature and appropriately communicating and applying the information to the patient care situation; and assisting with the development, maintenance, and implementation of hospital and department policy and procedures related to medication use, storage, restrictions, and administration.
  • Sustains and implements quality and safety initiatives and practices in the department and throughout the hospital. Reports adverse drug events and medication variances using the hospital variance reporting program (QSRS).
  • Sustains clinical pharmacy services throughout the organization by providing pharmaceutical care for pediatric patients of all age ranges through participation in multi-disciplinary team rounds and/or care, emergency response, education, guidance, interpretation and analysis of medication related therapeutic issues; documenting pharmaceutical interventions according to departmental standards; performing therapeutic drug monitoring and disease outcome analysis; and timely verification of medication orders in an electronic health record system.
  • Participate in general pharmacy operations throughout the organization through appropriate medication preparation, dispensing, and inventory control. Provides oversight to pharmacy technicians, interns, residents, and students as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Doctor of Pharmacy or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree
  • Experience: Completion of one year pharmacy residency
    • Preference will be given to those applicants who have at least one year of pediatric pharmacy experience and/or have completed a residency in pediatrics.
  • Equivalency: One year of pharmacy work experience accepted in lieu of residency
  • Certification(s): BLS certification (American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or American Safety and Health Institute accepted)
  • Licensure(s): State of Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) Pharmacist license
