PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

OVERVIEW OF POSITION / DEPARTMENT

The Associate Judge reports directly to the Presiding Judge on judiciary matters affecting the City of Aurora.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Judges sit full‑time, as trial judges pursuing the Aurora City Code of Ordinances to enforce traffic, criminal, zoning, and other code ordinances, and to punish violators thereof.
  • Follows rules of procedure enacted by the council upon recommendation of the presiding judge.
  • Presides over arraignments, bond determinations, hearings, pre‑trial dispositions, and trials.
  • Orders are entered for the consequences of proven violations of criminal/traffic/zoning/animal/other ordinances to provide a safe City and justice for the victims of crime.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS Education

Juris Doctorate

Experience
  • At least 5 years of litigation and/or judicial experience, preferably criminal law, or municipal court experience.
  • Must be knowledgeable of the Colorado Rules of Evidence, the Colorado Rule of Municipal Procedure, and evidence an ability to abide by the Colorado Code of Judicial Conduct.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of, and the ability to apply, the Colorado Rules of Evidence and the Colorado Municipal Court Rules of Procedure.
Skills
  • Must possess judicial demeanor, verifiable ethical and moral character, and the ability to work with judicial colleagues, staff, and the public.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
Abilities
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with municipal court judges, Mayor and City Council, judicial department staff, and senior management throughout the city; must possess judicial demeanor and work effectively with the public and attorneys.
Licenses and Certifications Required
  • Active license to practice law in the State of Colorado
WORKING CONDITIONS Essential Personnel

When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands
  • Sedentary physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 10 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing.
  • Clear vision in reading and reviewing recorded and transcribed material.
  • Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with the City Council, City Manager, employees, and citizens.
Work Environment
  • Works primarily in a courtroom environment with restricted movement for the duration of court sessions.
