What Happens After You Apply.
The Office of Research and Analysis (ORA) within the Taxation Division is a team of data scientists who collaborate to provide tax data and analytical expertise to division leadership, other executive agencies, legislators, and the public. The team is responsible for preparing and publishing statutorily required taxation reports as well as producing ad hoc reports as requested. These reports provide important data that informs decision making and tax policy.
In this training role, you will learn skills from a team of data scientists including how to analyze tax data, prepare reports, and communicate with internal and external customers about tax data. You will learn the team's established procedures and be encouraged to think outside the box because the team is continuously striving to make improvements. In this position, you can expect to continuously gain knowledge and learn new skills, because the team works in a dynamic environment with ongoing tax policy and system changes and ever-changing data needs.
This team thrives on collaboration and relies on peer review to produce accurate analyses for its data users. The team culture is collectivism instead of individualism. All work has shared ownership and is produced collaboratively. Changes to existing products and established processes require team buy‑in. The Typical Day as a Data Scientist Trainee:The data scientist trainee will:
- Acquire knowledge on state collected taxes and fees, tax forms, data structures, and tax data analysis
- Prepare recurring reports following established procedures
- Develop skills in querying tax databases, validating data, and researching anomalies
- Contribute to ad hoc economic and statistical analyses, reports, and projects as requested by internal or external customers
- Practice written and verbal communication with internal and external customers who request tax data analyses or have general tax data related questions
- Update relevant shared work tracking and recordkeeping tools/documentation to indicate key project information including milestone progress and decisions made
- Work collaboratively and iteratively with your teammates to determine the best approach to data requests and to produce the deliverables
This position reports to the Denver office for training or meeting on a quarterly basis.

Statistical Analyst I (I1B1XX
)
Four (4) years of relevant experience in statistical analysis, data science, economics, business analytics or a closely related field as determined by the Department.
OR
A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to statistical analysis, data science, economics, business analytics or a closely related field as determined by the Department equal to four (4) years.
Preferred Qualifications:- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
- Excellent interpersonal and team working skills
- Experience writing code to analyze data using SQL, RStudio, and/or Python
- High proficiency with writing SQL queries
- Advanced experience using Excel, including use of pivot tables, advanced functions (such as XLOOKUPS), data analysis, and data visualization
- Experience with data collection/extraction, cleaning, management, analysis, and interpretation, including basic statistical techniques
- Experience preparing statistical reports
- Experience with data visualization using Tableau, RStudio, and/or Excel
- Experience communicating data analyses to varied audiences
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience managing projects and processes
- State experience in taxation
