Job Summary

Under the guidance of licensed special education staff, assist students with severe special education needs by helping individuals or small groups of students with curriculum and behavior. Prepare student materials, monitor and record achievement and progress, provide technical physical care, and maintain a clean, hygienic work environment. In an online/remote setting, support students by assisting with access to remote learning, re‑teaching curriculum, implementing programming, setting up executive functioning strategies, and completing assignments.

Assignments include Autism, Behavior Development, Early Childhood Education, Homebound (FAPE) Program, Integrated Learning Center (ILC), Serious Emotional Disability, and Transition Programming.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties outline the fundamental operations of the position:

  • Assist students with classroom activities, including adapting the curriculum to individual student needs. Assist with curriculum delivery to individuals and small groups to ensure generalization of skills.

  • Implement student accommodations, supports, modifications, procedures, and programming as outlined in each student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). Maintain records of progress and behavior in collaboration with licensed staff.
    Daily 30%
  • Assist licensed special education staff in preparing materials, administering tests, recording attendance, and completing paperwork. Participate in classroom events such as fire drills as needed.
    Daily 5%
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Integrated Learning Center (ILC) and Homebound (FAPE) Program Assignment
  • Monitor students and reinforce appropriate behavior; assist in verbal de‑escalation and non‑violent crisis interventions to reduce risk of self‑harm or harm to others. Facilitate social interactions or communication between students with special needs and general education peers.
    Daily 15%
  • Provide technical physical care for students with special needs, including toileting, grooming, cleaning ventilator devices, feeding, gastrostomy tube care, positioning, and range‑of‑motion activities. Follow medication delivery orders as delegated by a registered school nurse.
    Daily 10%

Serious Emotional Disability (SED) Assignment
  • Monitor students and reinforce appropriate behavior; assist in verbal de‑escalation and non‑violent crisis interventions to reduce risk of self‑harm or harm to others. Facilitate social interactions or communication between students with special needs and general education peers.

Online/Remote Environment
  • Assist small groups or individuals with online classroom activities during synchronous or asynchronous learning, including curriculum accommodations or modifications.

  • Prepare assignments for students to complete at home and support completion of assigned work.

  • Maintain records of progress and behavior in collaboration with licensed staff, including special reports and IEP observations.

  • Support students in troubleshooting technology issues.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Criminal background check and fingerprinting required
  • High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma
  • No professional work experience required
  • Mandatory biennial Crisis Prevention Intervention training for staff working in Autism, Behaviorally Disordered, or ILC assignments
  • Medication administration training provided by the District as needed
  • Basic knowledge of typical office equipment (telephones, copiers, fax, email, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office
