Status: Part-Time, Seasonal (10 months/year) – With potential to be Full-Time
Hours: Approximately 22 hours per week, including evenings and weekends for swim meets
Position Summary
The Kennebec Valley YMCA is seeking a motivated, inclusive, and experienced Head Swim Team Coach to lead our competitive swim program. This coach will work with swimmers of all ages and abilities, from developmental to competitive levels, fostering a positive team culture that reflects the YMCA’s mission and core values. The Head Coach will be responsible for planning and conducting practices, attending and supervising swim meets, communicating with families, and collaborating with YMCA staff to ensure a high-quality aquatics program.

- Plan, organize, and lead swim practices for multiple age groups and ability levels.
- Develop seasonal training plans that promote skill development, sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth.
- Coach swimmers during practices and at weekend swim meets.
- Create an inclusive and supportive team environment aligned with YMCA competencies and values.
- Recruit and retain swimmers; support team growth and community engagement.
- Communicate regularly with swimmers, parents/guardians, and YMCA staff regarding schedules, expectations, and athlete progress.
- Collaborate with assistant coaches and volunteers; provide leadership and mentoring.
- Ensure swimmer safety and enforce YMCA policies and procedures at all times.
- Maintain required certifications and comply with YMCA standards.
- Assist with program administration, including meet entries, rosters, and scheduling, as needed.

- Current or ability to obtain YMCA Swimming Coach Certification.
- Current or ability to obtain USA Swimming Coach Certification.
- Current Safe Sport Certification (USA Swimming) or ability to obtain.
- Current CPR/AED, First Aid, and Lifeguarding certifications or ability to obtain.
- Previous swim coaching experience preferred (all age groups and ability levels).
- Knowledge of competitive swimming techniques, training principles, and meet procedures.
- Ability to work with diverse populations and create an inclusive team environment.
- Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Compliance with all YMCA and USA Swimming certification and background screening requirements.
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, and attend swim meets.
- Approximately 22 hours per week over a 10-month season.
- Includes weekday practices and weekend swim meets.
- Compensation commensurate with experience.
