This is responsible skilled work in all phases of vehicles and equipment maintenance and repair for Central Garage. Work involves skilled mechanical repairs, welding and cutting, maintenance, and diagnostic work. Work is performed under the general direction of the Fleet Service Manager and is reviewed through efficiency and quality of work.
Employee must converse with supervisors, vehicle operators, and other garage personnel regarding job assignments.
Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm.
However, candidates must have the ability to work non-standard hours for snow removal operations, city functions, or in an emergency.
- Perform skilled mechanical work, in all areas of maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment, such as welding, gas and diesel engine repairs and maintenance, small engine repairs and maintenance, hydraulics, brakes, drive train and electrical.
- Perform both light and heavy-duty vehicle inspections.
- Troubleshoot or diagnose vehicle problems and recommend corrective action.
- Skill to understand and follow detailed work instructions, both oral and written.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow workers and others and communicate in a pleasant and responsible manner.
- Ability to demonstrate flexibility in daily work duties to ensure efficient daily output.
- Ability to show leadership skills in the absence of a supervisor, provide instructions and make decisions as needed which may involve contacting (for example, by phone or radio) a supervisor for assistance or advice.
- Ability to share mechanical knowledge with fellow workers.
- High School education or equivalent and three (3) years’ work experience in automotive maintenance or related field. Working knowledge of both light and heavy-duty equipment with an emphasis on heavy equipment.
- Currently possess or can obtain a CDL A or B license within six months of date of hire.
- This CDL position is classified as safety sensitive.
An employee in this classification must participate in the drug and alcohol-testing program prescribed by FHWA rules and the City of Augusta Alcohol and Drug Policy and Testing Procedures as a condition of employment. - Possess and maintain a valid State of Maine Motor Vehicle Inspection License (A&D)
- Requires moderate physical activity with occasional lifting of objects weighing over 50 lbs. Must be able to bend, pull, push and reach. Outside work requirements include potential exposure to extremes of temperature during any time of year.
This is a full-time, non-exempt, union position with a comprehensive benefits package which includes:
